Any collector value here? Update!
I've got three full bricks of 1000 vintage CCI primers. I got several bricks of these from an Uncle several years ago, and I've been using them for just about all of my loading, trouble free. I got down to the last three full bricks, and wondered if there was any extra value over the cost of new primers for anybody that likes to collect vintage cartridges, ammo, ammo boxes, etc. I'm not sure of the exact date of these, but I suspect they are around 50 years old.
So shoot them up, or try to sell them?
Finally talked to CCI yesterday. They no longer had any way to nail down the date of manufacture by lot number, but through my description he knew they were from the mid 50's. I have one box that has a slightly different design, and a different style lot number, and he did tell me it was made December 14, 1959, and that this design that's pictured pre-dates that one. So mid 50's is close as we'll get. No value in the primers, other than what a primer is worth, but he did say the boxes are collectable to some, so if times get really hard, look out on fleabay or Gunbroker!

Re: Any collector value here?
Shoot em. I am shooting "vintage" primers too. They work just fine.
Re: Any collector value here?
I had some large pistol primers of similar vintage, shot them up with no problems. I did keep the box on the shelf though.

Re: Any collector value here?
I think any extra value you would get (and there would be some) from the vintage boxes would be gobbled up in shipping costs, unless you could sell them locally. If I couldn't clear double (after shipping) what it would cost me to replace them, I would shoot them. Then sell the boxes on eBay or Gunbroker (or give to friends )

Re: Any collector value here?
I didn't think there would be a lot of interest, and I've already shot up about 5K of them. I might put them on a auction for a week or two on Gunbroker and see if a fish bites, if not then I'll carry on poppin' em. And Vance you are first in line for an empty box.

Re: Any collector value here?
I have tried to resist the vintage collection urge. I am such a pack rat anyway. But, I have managed to accumulate a few. It won't be long and some of MY supplies will be vintage. (the $16 per 1000 primers and $1.99 Stingers for sure)

Re: Any collector value here?
You might want to just sell the empty boxes. Shipping primers legally is not a simple thing.
Slow is just slow.

UPS Ground and I think they require haz-mat fees now like powder.cas wrote:You might want to just sell the empty boxes. Shipping primers legally is not a simple thing.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
Re: Any collector value here?
That's backwards. Primers had the hazmat long before smokeless powder.jdad wrote:UPS Ground and I think they require has-mat fees now like powder.cas wrote:You might want to just sell the empty boxes. Shipping primers legally is not a simple thing.

I've been reloading for 40 years and have never seen that box design before. I'd contact CCI and ask how old they might be! Like Vance, I'd love an empty! Maybe send a PM and ask Terry M.

Yeah, I'm going to call them with the lot numbers and see if they can tell me anything.

I may be wrong, but I don't believe it's as simple as just paying the hazmat fee.

I was so stupid.....I probably bought the very last Craig 8-Track that was ever sold. But, boy, howdy, I could get tapes for about 49 cents each
This was 1974...Those stupid cassettes will never catch on.

Re: Any collector value here?
I had the 4-track... you know... the one with the hole in the bottom so the drive wheel could come up inside... then an 8-track... and LOTS of cassettes! All replaced with the Cassette type... which I liked the best. Now, the p/u has a 6-disc changer in the dash... and my big truck has a 12-disc changer! And what do I listen to all the time??? Yep, XM Satellite radio!BlaineG wrote:I was so stupid.....I probably bought the very last Craig 8-Track that was ever sold. Re: Any collector value here?
I hated 8-tracks the first time I ever saw one...stupid thing switched tracks in the middle of a song. I still have gobs of cassette...they won't play worth a dang from being in the hot car too much. I still think MP3 CDs are the neatest thing....can't warm up to thumbdrives or bluetooth. Why? when you can have 11 hours of music on a CD.

Re: Any collector value here? Update!
I came across a box of large pistol like the ones on the right that I had bought when I started reloading in the mid 60's. I've been using them up and they work fine. I guess I'll have to save the box to sell when it''s empty.

Re: Any collector value here? Update!
Ted,
Like others here, I have gone through many thousands of "old" primers of the type you have.
THESE are old primers. The yellow UMC has a patent date of Sept.14,1869 and the red Winchester has a patent date of 1878.
I've tried a few and never could get one to go off. Copper gets very hard with age and the firing pin mark was just a tiny dimple.------6
These are from the 1930's and used to be full. I could not resist some 20 years ago and open one pack up....They all worked just fine.

Re: Any collector value here? Update!
Heck no, these are prototypes that were in the making for 30 years before they were released to the public. I had these things LONG before anyone even knew what primers were.
One night me, good ole Sam (Colt) and Mr. Walker were having a sip of bourbon that came out of George Washington's liquor cabinet and I was given a heads up for things to come. IIRC, Terry Murbach was there too.--6
