New to me Model 1894AE Winchester Trapper 30-30

Post by Stan in SC »

Our kitchen remodeling three years ago made our contractor into a good friend. Several days ago he dropped by the house and left a gun case with my wife for me to look at the contents. When I got home I looked inside and found a new looking Winchester model 1894AE in 30-30 sporting a Nikon fixed 4 power in see thru mounts. Serial number is in the 6 million range so it is only a few years old.
It looks like new and has no dents, dings or scratches. He had never fired it having loaned a guy money on it a year or so ago and was never repaid. I made him an offer which he accepted and which was wee bit of profit for him. Not a REALLY great deal for me but acceptable. The part which made it acceptable to me was a saddle ring trapper model.
At the gun club the first shot I took with it was at 100 yards at a bowling pin. It is sighted in perfectly. Not sure that I'll keep it but it will be fun to shoot some.

I have one just like it. I took the safety out and put a plug over the hole on the left side. I haven't dealt with the dished-out hole on the right side yet.

RKrodle has one in .45 Colt and he epoxied a cartridge case head over the hole. Looks good, but the .45 Colt case covers better than a .30-30 case would. I may try it anyway.

My 30-30 Trapper SRC (no scope) is my go to woods walking rifle every time. I think you'll find you really like having a 30-30 Trapper around! I would recommend taking the scope off the Trapper with the 16" barrel, and either selling the scope or mounting it on rifle.

I removed the safety on my .357 Trapper. For a temporary fix I went to Ace Hardware and bought a package of these black hard rubber plugs with rounded heads. It popped right on and it looks like it belongs on there. Temporary is now 5 years and it's still solid. Cleaning and shooting hasn't affected it one bit, and it cost less than a buck.

.

I'd also suggest keeping it - The older you get, the more you'll appreciate what the .30-30 Trapper can do (besides being light enounh to carry all day).

My TE .30-30 Trapper has no CBS to remove................

The cross safety models are good. If it was a latter tang safety they make expensive tyre levers!

:D
I assume yes. My last 30/30 was awful to shoot. To many flyers all the time with any loads except light bullets.

To be honest I wish I had relieved the link at its junction with the bolt!

My tang safety 25-35 is great. You can see the very rifle on Gunblast.com.

Nice -- i love Trapper length carbines ---

PErsonally, i'd keep a fixed 4 power if its not too bulky, but i'd ditch the see thru rings and go with something more low profile

---- although something appears to be corrupted in your original post ---- i cant see the pics :)

Once you're on your 3rd post, pictures should be a breeze Why, even Mescelaro knows how! He just like Blaine to filter 'em and resize... (actually it keeps Blaine occupied and out of shopping malls...)

I love my TE .30-30 Trapper... some told me it would have a severe "bark"... but ain't that why you wear earplugs?

Enjoy!
