47 Ronin
The wife and kids wanted to go see it for Christmas so I buckled and took them. The movie was fantastic. I was blown away by the action and it had just enough cgi to keep you fixated. Well worth seeing. If you know the story then you'll really like the movie

Re: 47 Ronin
I grew up hearing the original true historical story known as "Chushingura" so personally afraid to see how much Hollyweird has butchered an iconic story of honor and duty.

Ji,
I am unfamiliar with the story, is it worth it?

It's the '300' treatment of history.
Possibly mostly true to history, but the real story is just as awesome without the other stuff.

I would recommend the Japanese version with subtitles.Mescalero wrote:Ji,

Thank you.

What about the 1941 Imperial Japanese propaganda version?

Anyone see that one?

I am looking forward to seeing it, but it is tanking at the theaters. The company that produced it (can't remember which one) has already taken a write down for the loss. I'm still planning on seeing it!

Re: 47 Ronin
Just curious, what makes this version propaganda? Does it throw in anti-American slogans throughout the script? If it came out in 1941 it was before the war started for the Japanese (December 7th). It seems to be highly regarded in the reviews in Amazon more cerebral than action oriented of other versions.junkbug wrote:What about the 1941 Imperial Japanese propaganda version?

I hate to admit it but I'll probably go see it too mostly out of curiosity.Ysabel Kid wrote:I am looking forward to seeing it, but it is tanking at the theaters. The company that produced it (can't remember which one) has already taken a write down for the loss. I'm still planning on seeing it!

Re: 47 Ronin
I believe it was sponsored by the Imperial government which had already been at war with the Chinese for some time. From what I read, the people that produced it were only partially cooperative with the government on this, wanting to put the "art" first.
I would also consider "Sergeant York" a propaganda movie, although it was not to my knowledge sponsored by our government. That does not change the fact that I really like the movie. Another movie I would consider propaganda is "The Santa Fe Trail" which attempts to recast John Brown from a hero as he was usually seen in the north, into a troubled mad man. Once again, I still like that movie also.

That, and any movie with a katana in it can't be all that bad. 47 katanas? I have to give it a whirl.Friends Call Me Ji wrote:I hate to admit it but I'll probably go see it too mostly out of curiosity.Ysabel Kid wrote:I am looking forward to seeing it, but it is tanking at the theaters.
