Cat track size

Post by Walker »

Maybe it's just me, growing up in Oklahoma but this seemed to be a little too large and too close to camp. The 30-30 round is in the pad part of the track and the shadow is smaller than the actual imprint.

Saw more cat than mule deer tracks and a little too fresh for my taste. From back in October in the Mojave near the Cali-Nevada border.

Like a Mexican jaguar with spots? Cool!

We just have regular tan mountain lions up here. I kind of like seeing them, as long as they keep clear of the house and animals (pets, even the cow is a pet  )

Yes, as far as I can tell.
The calf predation on the ranch has all been bear and mountain lion.

SoCal has some big cats. And the moratorium on hunting hasn't hurt the population... of the big cats.

Ahh heck, that's probably just the little brother to a big one. As mentioned, no hunting has resulted in way too many cats. And, the cats don't fear people like they should, they see them as food.

I'm a houndsman that has hunted and guided lion hunters for 30 years. One method I use to determine how big the cat is to compare the track to the size of my fist knuckles extended. If I can easily cover the track with my fist, it is a smaller or female cat. Same size as my fist, it is an average mature tom. Bigger than my fist, it is a huge cat.

I can't really judge by your photo where the track begins and ends, so I can't help you much.

Saw a mountain lion for the first time in 30 years while quail hunting in Ventura County CA mountains a couple of weeks ago. He was about 100 yards away and in no hurry to leave; he could tell I had only a shotgun! But I switched the 7 1/2s for two deer slugs in quicktime, let me tell you!

I don't worry much about cats when I'm out in the mountains, and many of the places I work don't allow firearms. We always go in twos and watch carefully when we get into tight spots with overhangs. Nobody is allowed onto the preserves alone, except cops, who are of course armed. If we see somebody alone, we CALL the cops. Caught a new hire that way once, embarrassing all around. But not as "embarrassing" as dying alone up there....

Good sized kitty, Walker
Here's a couple tracks from up my way. There were two here this time, mother and a young one.

To the right of the bush you can see the rock they walked over in this second pic, my house in the background there.
