PICS_1937 Model 71 Carbine "Short Rifle"

Post by Jarhead »

Here's some PICs as requested by some of my 1937 Vintage Model 71 "Short Rifle" AKA Carbine w/Bolt Peep sight. It handles nice and has very quick sight alignment for hunting Elk in the timber. The PICs aren't that good, so I took a couple of close ups as well. Wish I had a better Camera...Check out the price on that box of 250gr Silvertips in the last Pic....not sure what year that was, but I paid a heck of lot more than that... :( $5.65 8)

I feel very lucky to have run into this Rifle. I picked it up from an Elderly Marine who Served on Guadalcanal during WW2, which makes it even more special...to me anyway. I am a life member of the Marine Corps League and met this gentleman while attending some meetings. He was a Winchester Buff, and told me it was the only one he had ever come across.

Beautiful rifle. Long tang, '37, short, bolt-peep ... talk about hard to come by. And in such fine condition.

Thanks...

I've had the rifle since 2000....have had/have other 71's but this is the only "Short Rifle." Have a friend who also has an Early "Short Rifle", yet his in a Standard...Great Elk Rifle! He tells me the Standard is harder to find than the Deluxe...?

That is a very nice rifle you have there, and its heritage makes it extra special.

That's a nice rifle, I seen a short rifle, but I think it was a standard, for over 4000.00 at the last Tulsa Wanenmacher Gunshow, and it wasn't as slick as yours.

That's an interesting price on the ammo box. The first year of the $5.65 retail price for .348 ammo was 1962, and the "grizzly" box was current 1940-1946. I wonder if the box sat in a shop somewhere for a LOT of years? It seems too odd an amount to be a "gun show" price for the box, unless maybe somebody at a show wanted to put it out at the then-current retail price for the ammo.
My mind reader refuses to charge me..........

Now listen boy, I'm tryin' to teach you somethin'. That ain't an optical illusion, it only LOOKS LIKE an optical illusion.

There's a 1937 "Short Rifle" like mine on sale in Cabelas Gun Library currently going for $7200.00 and it's about 85-90% maybe less , but Cabelas is always high with thier pricing. In another 10 years??? Who knows? I don't plan on selling it, but will leave it to my Daughter....or perhaps I'll have a Grandson someday. In the meantime, I am going to hunt with her.... 8)
