POLITICS - Never a goodreason for Guns on Campus.

Cougar sighting
According to a recent article in the Herald Palladium, an animal believed to be a cougar has been spotted in the Berrien Springs area, including near the St. Joseph River on the Andrews University campus. Mountain lion sightings and encounters have increased throughout southwest Michigan over the past several years. Although lion attacks are rare, they are possible, as is injury from any wild animal. We offer the following recommendations to increase your safety:
-Avoid walking or biking alone, particularly in remote areas of campus.
-Never approach a mountain lion. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.
-Always give them a way to escape. Don't run. Stay calm.
-Hold your ground or back away slowly. Face the lion and stand upright.
-Do all you can to appear larger. Grab a stick. Raise your arms.
-If you have small children with you, pick them up.
-If the lion behaves aggressively, wave your arms, shout and throw objects at it.
-If attacked, fight back! (with what? "weapons" are "prohibited"!!!)
The goal is to convince the animal you are not prey and may be dangerous yourself. Generally, mountain lions are calm, quiet and elusive. The chance of being attacked by a mountain lion is quite low compared to may other natural hazards. There is, for example, a far greater risk of being struck by lightning than being attacked by a mountain lion.

It will be hard for the populace of Andrews to convince the mountain lion they are not prey since a good portion of them are vegetarians, one of the unnofficial tenants of their faith.

-Don't leave your weed laying around for them to eat, they will get the "munchies" and we will really be in trouble.

Not all of them. A good number in the School of Architecture are "Heathens"... I should know, three of them work in my office. In a way, those are the same kind of people who tease the kittys at the zoo. (Remember San Francisco)
But traveling with one of them is a good idea. That way, you don't have to outrun the cat, just your "partner" (who won't so fast after getting a good kick somewwhere important).....

They downplay (perhaps rightly so) risks like THIS, but they would never admit the chances of a CCW licensee causing death are ALSO very slim.Old Ironsights wrote:There is, for example, a far greater risk of being struck by lightning than being attacked by a mountain lion.
I love how in Cincinnati when I lived there, odds were 1:200 of being assaulted in that city per year, and the police advised anyone who wanted to carry concealed was being 'paranoid' to worry about such a low risk. Then they turn around and enact prohibitive legislation to 'protect' the children from about 20 toddler deaths by gun accidents in a nation of almost 300,000,000 people, with probably 20,000,000 of them in that age bracket. So, 1:1,000,000 odds are reason for panic and re-writing the Constitution, yet 1:200 odds are not even considered a valid reason to have a gun.
Doctors for Sensible Gun Laws
"first do no harm" - gun control LAWS lead to far more deaths than 'easy access' ever could.
Want REAL change? . . . . . "Boortz/Nugent in 2012 . . . ! "

Berrien county
Grew up near Berrien Springs... lived in the area several years as an adult.
I though I'd seen some big kitty tracks down that way.
What does the Michigan DNR say about the big cats? We used to see a big cat up in the Midland area and the DNR said we didnt have Cougars or Mountain Lions around there either. Of course the DNR says those big dogs around are not wolfs either.

SW Michigan
We built and repaired a lot of powerline in Berrien Cass and St Joseph counties over the last few years.
If you spend your days around the edges of all those right -of- ways and back on those farms you see a lot of things.
I am not suprised the DNR in Michigan is not confirming cougars today... we saw scat and prints all over the state.
A guy nearly hit a bear that didnt exist between Clare and Midland a few years back too.
