I'm new here...
I'm new to the forum so I thought I'd introduce myself. I got into the lever actions real hard within the last year. In the last seven months I've bought eight Marlins in various calibers and years of manufacture. I prefer the no hammer block safety version and I'm really only interested in pre 80's guns. Probably my favorite one is the one here attached. It's a 1964 vintage Marlin 336, 444 Magnum....I know what you're thinking...so here's the story....This rifle started out it's life as a 1964 Marlin 336, 44 Magnum with a 20 inch barrel. It came to me from Washington State and belonged to an older guy who way back when had the rifle barrel and magazine tube cut down to 16 1/4 inches and had it re-chambered to shoot 444 Marlin. He mounted the scout scope and the Williams peep sight and according to his grandson took that rifle on every hunt he went on in the Northwest and Canada for Elk, Moose and Bear. I bought it from the grandson off one of the auction sites. I guess you could say this was a Guide Gun before Marlin decided to make the Guide Gun....It shoots real nice and is a dream to carry. I'll be poking around the forum quite a bit. I like what I see here. Hope to talk to you all soon....thanks for having me.

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

'Winchesters' eh; when did they come out with those - don't believe I've heard of them before. Are they an inferior copy of the Marlins, or what...?30wcf wrote:...those Winchester's have way too many screws, they're nice though...

Re: I'm new here...
and Welcome to THE Forum. I see the word is getting out about Leverguns... Especially the part about pictures!
Interesting rifle. While I appreciate the pristine ones, undisturbed by human frailty, it's the ones that've been personalized that I find interesting! While the 336-44 is rare, and the 444s rather numerous, it's too bad he made that rechambering... but... it makes for an interesting rifle and story.
The Winchester/Marlin debate is endlessly tiresome... I'm just glad that they made Marlins, and that some folks really like 'em... keeps the cost my Winchesters within reason!

Re: I'm new here...
Hope you enjoy it here. There is a lot of knowledge floating around this site, and some of it is about leverguns. Don't worry about the Marlin/Winchester running debate. It is one of those things like the debate about which brand of vehicle is best. If lever action rifles were meant to be scoped, we would have eyes that couldn't pick out details smaller than 1/2 inch at 100 yards and they wouldn't come in calibers that are 1/2 minute of angle at 500 yards.

Actually, my prettiest-ever gun is my only Winchester levergun - a 94 Big Bore in 375 Win; and it's not just a looker - it's a practical thumper, as well.pwl44m wrote:In Ur Dreams Doc, and wcf I'm ashamed of U.

Welcome to a great forum. Don't sweat the Winchester/Marlin ribbing, it's kinda part of the charm. I own and like both but for different reasons........but scouts rule no matter the brand!
