Vintage Clothing (hunting) questions

Post by 86er »

In the post I made where I took a deer with my Henry 35-30/30 you see me wearing green wool pants. Those pants are 6 years older than I am. The zipper was replaced at some point but they are awesome. I would like to add some vintage hunting clothes to my closet. Is there some kind of reference that gives descriptions and values? How do you figure out the weight, insulation, and specs if the seller does not know? For example: There are many red/black plaid coats on ebay. I can find my approximate size based on the descriptions (and it might fit) but I can't figure out what brand to favor, how to tell the level of warmth, etc. Just in that type of coat there is Woolrich, JC Penneys, Sears, Pendleton, etc.... Price is an object, or I'd could just look at a brand new version. Anyone have tips or information about purchasing vintage items like these?

One warning, the really older stuff like ww2 vintage are sized differently. There XL was barely a L in my looking. I'm always on the look-out for a true Hudson's Bay wool blanket coat but the fit never works out. Most guys were lean and fit in those days.

One name respected here were wool cloths meant something was Woolrich.

Keep us informed as this interests me too.

I picked up a red/black plaid Woolrich shirt in a local market a few weeks back, a rare find in the UK... 8)

For new, look at Filson, their general design or cut has not changed significantly in decades.

For hunting woolies, you can't go wrong with any of the big-3: Woolrich, Carter, or Filson.

ALL the outerwear was heavy-enough wool that you needn't worry too much about the insulation rating(s), as they all have about the same level of warmth - but I've found the Filson line to be a bit thicker/stiffer than the others.

Just buy outerwear that's large enough to wear a set of Duo-Fold undergarments (aka: long-john's) under them & still have freedom of movement. (In case of really cold weather)

The beauty of wool outergarments is that they're both quiet when walking through brush; and warm after you got wet by stepping in a puddle MUCH deeper than you thought.
(or slipped & fell into a puddle - BT, DT, NTS..... )

Joe,
I got all my vintage wool plaids through Ebay.
The key is to ask the seller lots questions and get lots of mesurments.
The coat is a Black Bear brand from the 40’s. It is a caped coat (double thick)
The pants are Soo Wool brand from the 40’s (notice the March 1946 dry cleaning tag)
The vest & logger shirt are LL Bean brand, if I remember right, made in the 60’s.

I wore this outfit last year during the PA. rifle season.
I will indeed be doing the same this year but carrying an antique Marlin or Win. lever gun.

Once you start to get on these sites more and more vintage hunting stuff pops up.
Yes, I like the Vintage stuff. Wool is hard to beat and is extremely warm/quiet and wears well and the vintage stuff just looks cool period. Good Luck Joe!

The Military Wool Pants for cold weather were wonderful, if not bit scratchy (though, I suspect the Quartermaster Laundry is not the best place in the world for softening wool.....I wash my wool army blankets, and use Downey....just like fine cotton...)

Wow, great thread! I've always wanted one of these, but I'm a big T.R. fan and have read multiple books on him.

I wore a wool 2 piece suit that was loaned to me by my "Uncle" Dan while visiting him in AK and hunting for moose. I did slog through some very deep wet tundra and got rained on. While I was still warm, the wool soaked up so much water I gained 30 lbs at least of water weight, and it was noticeable as I trudged home.

Still way cool though. 8) :D

I've got one outfit that I just purchased to match the era of my 1939 Remington 141. It should be here soon. I cannot find anything old enough to match my 1908 Remington 8. I am looking for a 1970 era outfit to match a few other rifles and shotguns I have. Thanks for the tips. I appreciate the input - keep it coming!
