A couple years ago I got some 500 grain meister bullets, well, because they
just called out to me.
Since then I had sold my Guide Gun (shameless I know) but I just picked up
this H&R 45-70 and still have some Leverevolutions and Corbons to stuff down
the pipe.
Of all the snooping around I did H4895 seems to attract me but I would like
more knowledge before I go ahead with this.
I'm gonna take a wild guess and say my shoulder won't like anything more than
probably 1500 fps so the plain base shouldn't be a problem.
What would you use???
Good powder for H&R 45-70 and 500 grain solids???

I've used H322 and Re7 under the 525g cast, 2400 under the 425g cast, and trailboss under the 325g cast. I've shot all these loads out of my H&R.

I have used H335 but I am going to switch to H322 due to it being an Extreme powder and it has more consistent ignition in all temperature conditions.

I'd use someone else's shoulder.
I think you're right. I love Handi's but I think that thing is going to really get your attention.
I've thought about getting a Buffalo classic barrel for mine, but I'm just not sure.

Rusty, I regularly shoot 525g cast out of my buffalo classic at around 1575fps, no shoulder problems. The recoil just isn't that bad. I'd guess that you could stress test the chamber and get some good thumping out of it, but none of the loads I've tried at sub Ruger#1 pressures is painful to shoot.Rusty wrote:I'd use someone else's shoulder.

I did the quick "pizza box with target sticker" thing offhand at 50 yards.
The only corbon 45-70 that I can find that "looks" like these are the 405 grain
ones going about 1600 fps.
I lost the box long ago using a plastic shell box (lesson learned there) but in
my memory I had bought 420 grain corbons with the small dot of lead showing
on the tip. Were these in fact made but discontinued? Or do I have the 405's
along with a bad memory.
They got my attention but it's what was expected in the H&R.
I'll prolly go get a chrono and look for something in the range of 14-1500
out of the solids, maybe less we'll see. In the woods behind my house I
doubt I'll get a 100 yard shot ever.
Thank you for your answers and the powders to consider.
