I just received this:

URGENT ATTENTION REQUIRED!!!!

We have been notified by Henry Repeating Arms that some rifles may have been shipped by them loaded with ammunition. If you have any Henry Rifles in inventory they must be inspected to make sure they do not contain ammunition. Also, please inspect any incoming Henry Rifles. This does not relate to a specific model or date. Each gun in your inventory must be checked for ammunition.

Henry Repeating Arms apologizes for any inconvenience that this may cause

That got my attention quickly.

All the gunshops I frequent habitually clear the action before allowing a customer
to handle their guns. The proper thing to do whenever a firearm changes hands.

This also supports rule number one of gun safety.

Do they "test fire" a percentage before shipping?

Or could it be a disgruntled employee?

A "mole" put in place by anti's?

My curiosity is piqued, hopefully more info will come from Henry.

I'm not sure "inconvenience" is the proper word to use here. I'm trying to imagine myself in my local Gander Mountain looking over the used rack and suddenly being penetrated by a 22 that some youngster is handling. Then again, those stores always strap the actions so tight with ties that there really isn't any test driving of the actions to be had. In a regular gun store, one manned by gun people and at least one FFL, I think it's less of a concern as most arms are well looked over before being placed on the rack.

Still, when the first round is discharged in a store from this incident, I'm not sure Henry will consider the resulting suit as a simple "inconvenience" either.

Kind of a Murphy's law type thing.

If it fits in there and is meant to be there, eventually it's going to get there by
accident.

Every gun in my safe is put there UNLOADED. When they come out of the safe
they have the action cycled to make sure they are empty. Why?

Because given enough time someday someway I would not be surprised (well, maybe)
to cycle an action and have a shell fly out.

Hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it wont.

I have to admit it's happened to me (Ruger MkII pistol). I am extra careful with platforms that have a detachable mag, as a result. It's all too easy to drop the mag nonchalantly and assume its unloaded later.

Maybe Henry would hire me to check actions as they get boxed for oh, say, $250k/year. It'd be a lot cheaper than a lawsuit.

Crud, If they'd pay me half that I'd be more than half inclined to buy 86er's house and move out there...

A completely trustworthy friend and hunting companion just stopped by work here and asked me if I'd heard about the accidental discharge of a Henry .357 Golden Boy in Jay's sporting goods up in Gaylord, MI this weekend. That's only about 30 miles North of here.

The story has it the store employee cleared and inspected the action before handing the rifle to a potential customer. The customer then worked the action one more time to see how smooth it was, pointed it at the floor and (dry) fired it, capping off a round that richocheted off the carpet-covered cement floor but luckily never struck anyone. After the incident they supposedly discovered another 4 or 5 rounds still in the magazine tube.

Should hear something about it on the local news tonite if that is in fact, true. Seems to be a really wild story from this guy if it's not true, and I have no reason to disbelieve him. Especially hearing it just 3 hours after reading this post out of the clear blue.

We'll see.
