New Levergun "woods-walking-deer camp-house-gun" sidearm.
my corner-LGS recently received three GP-100's (.357mag) that have a 4" half-lugged barrel and fixed sights (see my lousy cell phone photos). i haven't seen one of these since the 90's., very popular with LE Depts until the semi-auto replaced the revolver as the duty gun of choice. I bought the GP-100 new, it seems that the barrels are old-new-stock since they have the older stamped logo and caliber designation, the frame has the newer laser etched details. the hammer is not the newer MIM part, but the trigger is. my LGS shop was shocked as I was to see this configuration. i had one on these back in the 80's and sold it for books in 1992 (seminary was not cheap) and have been looking for one ever since. as far as i am concerned a 1/2 lugged fixed-sighted GP-100 in .357mag is a good choice for a "woods-walking-deer camp-house-gun"... :)

Nice. Really nice. I found a S&W 581 4" blue fixed full underlug and a 4" GP100 like that, store also had my 4" SS Security Six that I bought. Never gave the GP much thought till your post. Are they worth lots of money, I.E. did miss out on a shootable collectable? 3leg

I like those old style barrels have one with a 3" bbl fixed sights carry it in a cross draw or chest holster run 180- 185gr LBT's those gp100's are tough guns. danny
Re: New Levergun "woods-walking-deer camp-house-gun" sidearm
i don't think they have much collector value...Ruger still makes a 3" fixed sighted variant (full-lug see pics)...what I bought is simply a configuration from the past (they also made these in .38spl. only). you'll see some of these re-entering the US market from oversees. I've always considered getting one of the 3" models, but the 4" allows me to shoot "stuff" legally. if I came across the S&W 581 or 586 i would have bought that too, then i would have been real broke and me and all of my .22 ammo would have to move in with BlaineG...only kidding, well kind-off... :)3leggedturtle wrote:Nice. Those are NICE. Remind me of the older "Speed Six" and "Service Six" (adjustable sight) versions...

Cool sixgun!
I had an S&W 65 former police gun with a 4" barrel that I bought for my Ex when she traveled.
Excellent shooter, really miss that revolver! Fortunately I was able to keep the 2 1/2" Model 66 I bought
at the same time! She forgot about that one!

I really wanted the 581, but felt like it weighed 3lbs or better, just didn't want to lug that around all day. Back in early '11, a Cabela's in CT. (I think) had a speed six in 38 sp. for $240. I wanted it to go with my 38Sp Contender carbine. Called twice but they never returned my call. . Oh well I really like my 4" and 6" Sec Sixes.

I'd love a 4" with adjustable sights Actually, that new SP101 with adjustable sights, and it's baby brother the 8 shot .22 with adjustable sights would be a heck of a pair to draw to....

I *REALLY* liked the half-lug GP100s...
Had a Full Lug for a while before I got the Casull & SP101, but I'd take a Half Lug over a Full Lug in a minute.

Big sky 56,
what is the largest thing you have shot with that ruger & load.
I seem to remember you carry it as a last chance bear gun.

The SP101 .22 is NOT available in magnum. I wish it were.

Amazing, yes! However when I finally filed for divorce, eight months after she bugged out, she was making three times what I was & she conveniently forgot about a lot of stuff.
when she was told by HER attorney that she would have to pay me @ $1100/ mo. for three years.
I got 90% of what I wanted!!!!

Mescal, bears. the only drawback to a da ruger is the cylinder turns bassauckwards but they are tougher than a colt python. the 180's leave the bbl at 1300 fps and I have seen 4'+ penetration on a lion frontend to backend. danny

4' penetration at 1300fps, thats impressive. What is your load you are using? Why is the Ruger rotation a drawback? 3leg

Turtle, CP 180's, 17gr lil'gun, starline cases & standard cci primers the cases fall out of the cylinder. after using a python from the get go and single actions I dont suffer change very well so S&W and ruger counterturning cylinders just bug me . danny

OK I understand now The only thing that was different when I got my Security Sixes was I went measure some bullets out of them and realized they had a 5 grooves. I still haven't chronoed any loads out of them yet, hopefully sometime b4 the snow flies again. thanks Todd

Nice pick up.....one of the few firearms I ever let get away was a KGP-141 (full lug, adjustable sight but otherwise the same as yours). It was a fine revolver and I have occasionally regretted it.
