I'm miffed

Post by hondo1892 »

My daughter came home for a few days between semesters this past week. So her Jeep is in need of new tires and Mom and I are working so she went today to get tires by herself (first time for her). I told her to ask for the wheel weights back that they would be taking off the rims before rebalancing them. She sent me a text letting me know she had bought the new tire but couldn't get the tire weights. She was informed that the government wouldn't allow the big chain tire store to give the weights to the general public, you must be a licensed recycler. She didn't ask for all they had just what was on her Jeep. Here in Michigan it's law that if they do any mechanical work on you car that the place must give the old part back or at least show it to you. Not if it's lead. I'm not trying to be political about this. It just irritates me that you can't even ask for your own garbage back.

Take 'em off before you go... simple solution... you ain't gonna hurt the tires any more than they already are. Must be a local law.

Seems like those are YOUR property.

Sounds like they failed to return your spare parts to you.

Griff I was going to pop them off last night but didn't know how well the Jeep would do with a short wheel base and out of balanced tires. I'd rather loose 8 ounces of lead rather than my little girl. It just irritates me that they wouldn't let her have them back. Mostly just blowing off steam. It may be a local thing the tire store is in Ann Arbor, bunch of tree huggers.

So, how does one become a "licensed recycler"? Might be a way to open the stream of lead. :D

As of last summer no Michigan law existed and I can find no mention anywhere of it being passed in 2012 or 2013.

I'll bet they wouldn't pull that on daddy.

If it had been me I'd have told them to put the old tires back on. I'll go someplace else and see how they feel about losing the sale.

The Peoples Democratic Socialist State of Ill(inois) has banned the sale of lead wheel weights as of January of last year.

The last time I had a tire patched they took the lead weights off and rebalanced it with steel ones. Next time I WILL pull the lead ones off and keep them.
Not that they will add much to the small stash of lead I still have.

And I'm NOT judging the OP by saying this...but I will not send my wife or daughters to the tire shop. Been using the same shop for nearly 30 years but it seems like you have to watch everyone like a hawk nowadays. Just getting them to balance tires properly without you lording over them...let alone put the two tires you want on the back and put the two new ones on the front...stuff like that. Its a pain but I just wait till I can go myself.

I get free balancing and flat repair for life. I make them patch the flats. I replaced two of my wife's tires recently and when I inspected the takeoffs they each had more than one plug in them .....grrr. No wonder she has to go back for flat repair more often than I do.

I've bought lead from the recyclers before. Ticks you off when the lead and zinc ones float to the top. Need to take them back for a refund. I've seen people trying to sell lead that they claimed was WWs but it was already melted. Had a funny look to it. I'm thinking they just let it get hot enough that even those 'stubborn' WWs finally melted???

We used to have a silver reclaimer on the xray processor which you could then turn in to get the money. Now, the govt requires you to have one that you must pay them about $166 to get then they reclaim it and keep the proceeds from the silver. They have given us a classification as a CESQG - that is a conditionally exempt small quantity generator of hazardous materials with all the responsibilities and liabilities and requirements there included. This little boondoggle will be going away as more switch to digital.

You know, I used to pick up the easy lead at Butterfield when I shoot there. Last year or so the place has been picked clean by metal scroungers. One guy down there told me the city is considering putting up "no picking" signs.

The line I've usually heard at tire shops is that it's against "company policy". Which is fine, their business is theirs to run as they like. My customer policy is to not do business with libtard idiots, so I usually buy tires elsewhere when I hear that one. One guy at a Discount Tire was really disappointed that his boss wouldn't let him sell the weights, he was a quick thinker and realized that if he fixed me up, I would probably cast him a bunch in his favorite calibers

Stock up on wheel weights while you can. They seem to be slowly phasing out.

1. Next time buy your times out of state (Illinois). I got so fed up with Kalifornia that last time I bought a house I bought it is another state.

2. Last time I bought tires I had to sign a release to get the new tires put on front while keeping old ones on rear. Seems that some federal idiot has determined that it is safer that way. With a front wheel drive I want the best tires on front for traction, control, and steering in inclement weather. Why is it that the same politicians that can't manage their own lives feel qualified to tell the rest of us how to run ours?

Makes me wonder about mining berms at the range? Could use a cat lidderbox scoop and a gallon bucket.

Dad didn't have time to take the Jeep for tires. My daughter came home for just a couple of day's and other things were needing done as well as the tires. Besides Dad won't live forever and she will need to do these things on her own. But I would have told the tire shop to give me MY weights back or I would take my business to the next guy.
