"Operation Pluto" 1944 (Pipe-Lines Under The Ocean)
Ever wonder how the Allies got all the needed fuel over to our troops operating in Europe???
Here's a Link to a fascinating video on how they did it!
In all the WWII books or documentaries I've ever reviewed, I'd never seen this before... Enjoy!

Think of how much lead was in those first pipes mentioned. That would make a bunch of bullets.

Amazing. I always thought the gas was shipped over. I wonder if anything still remains in the ocean or have they all rusted away?

A lot of the crude exported via super tankers is loaded via underwater pipeline because the ships are either too large to enter harbor or too hazardous. The oil is pumped offshore to deepwater outlets where the tankers 'plug in' and fill up.

Some ships unload the same way, and off shore rigs, often pipeline crude ashore. In fact, most city folks have absolutely no idea what is flowing under the street in front of their house.BAGTIC wrote:A lot of the crude exported via super tankers is loaded via underwater pipeline because the ships are either too large to enter harbor or too hazardous. Another bit of history all but forgotten.
Did you know the Battle of Britain (air war) was maybe only won because at the last minute a gasoline
tanker from America carrying high octane aviation gasoline made it to England.
This special 130 octane gas allowed the Merlin engine in the Spitfires and Hurricanes to make hundreds
of more horsepower than without. The development of high octane gasoline (by Shell among others)
is another unknown story of the war.

Just back from England and I saw one of the pumps at either the Science Museum (London) or at the Imperial War Museum (Duxford). Surprising it is not as large as I would of thought it would of been. I first thought it was a power pak like for a tank, until I read the placard.
