Goodguys Spring 2013 Lone Star Nationals -pic heavy

Post by awp101 »

Yep, last weekend was that time of year again. Goodguys had their 3d annual spring show out at Texas Motor Speedway. A beautiful Saturday (80-83*F). I know the commercials always predict 2000 vehicles, but I'd ball park this one at around 1500. OK, enough of my babbling, here's some of the tin I found interesting...

Buck Owens' '51 Merc
According to the placard, Buck Owens (yes, that one) saw this car at a show in 2000 and purchased it from the owner for $55K. The only major changes he made to the car were to have his name and guitar logo stitched into the front door panels, the song title "Together Again" stitched into the back seat and "Together Again" pinstriped at the rear of the doors (I thought I had a pic of that).

'32-34 Chevy.
I've always thought that was a great use for an old cam....

I love those 49-53 Ford and Mercs... 8)

Is this BigSky56's new business venture?

This one was so odd looking that it sort of intrigued me. Sort of.

I thought the engine plumbing was great!

Image
'29 Model A with a 350/350 combo
I wouldn't mind this one being in the drive. I think a slight change in tires (I'm not a huge fan of wide rears without fenders unless it's a dedicated drag car but that's just my personal taste) would be the only thing I'd do to it.

I never could understand what kind of I4 the owner was saying it had.

Love the pinstriping

Did I mention I'm a huge fan of the Lead Sled?

Willys Gasser!

Image
'62 T-Bird Kustom (yes, Kustom :P )
For a long time I really wasn't a fan of the '60s style kustoms, especially the more elaborate ones, but this simpler style is REALLY growing on me!

The center console was an ammo can with a cup holder installed. I couldn't get a good shot of it but it was uber-cool!

Yum....

Image
'49 Ford
A project but from what I saw, it could be made into a real looker with a modicum of effort and determination. Did I mention...

Image
'53 Chevy
The '49-54 Chevys don't rank quite as high on my "Ooooh look at THAT!" scale as the Fords and Mercs but I think they look better unchopped and riding at closer to stock height. Sometimes just the right wheel/tire combo is all it takes to make one into a good looking ride.

'39 Dodge with another 454

Image
'34 Ford with a 355 and 5spd
I seem to shoot this one at each show. It must appeal to me somehow...

Image
Image
Image
'60 Chevy Kustom (running a 348 IIRC)
This one is right at the edge of what I consider "too much" when it comes to the '60s style kustoms. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the effort and work that goes into a paint job like that, but I guess my preferences are a little more understated. Then again, it wasn't built for me so he can do as he durn well pleases! :D

Rat Rodders seem to have the best sense of humor, or at least the best sense of irony.

This one is supposed to have local drag racing ties but I didn't think to get a pic of the placard for the info.

Image
Image
'23 Ford Track-T
The story behind this one was neat enough that I just had to post the whole thing.

Image
'59 Rambler
I'd always heard the big Ramblers looked like an upside down bathtub. Looks like it to me!

Image
'53 Lincoln Cosmopolitan
Not something you see every day. Or at every show...

Image
'56 Chevy pickup
Certainly one of the things on my "Lottery List" will be a modified Tri-Five pickup.

Image
Flathead!
This '32 Model B pickup has a Model B engine up front so I don't know if he had this out for display, had just picked it up in the swap meet section or if he's planning to drop this in as a replacement. Or maybe he just thought it looked cool in the bed.

Image
'72 Maverick running a 347 and T5
I've seen this one the past few shows and I'd really like to see it on the autocross track to see what it can do. I think one of these Mavericks could be a fun, fairly easy project IF you can find one that isn't rotted out or cut up for drag racing. Build up either an older 302 or drop in a late model (say mid-90s) 5.0 and have a boat load of fun in a car you don't see many of anymore outside of the drag strip. In fact, you could say the same for the Vega if you're a die-hard GM fan. Just use a 327 instead.

No additional comments needed...

Now to bide my time until the October show....

Thanks guys, it was hard work but someone had to do it...

Mike, it was about 3 hours off and on to get the pics edited, resized, labeled and uploaded spread over 2-3 days. The actual post took 45 min to an hour off and on. Not too bad really.

It really is equal parts art and science. With just a hint of majik juju thrown in. I've seen cars that were properly built but the styling or proportions weren't taken into consideration and I've seen pretty cars that I wouldn't have ridden 15' in due to safety or general ride concerns.

RIHMFIRE, I spent 6 hours walking TMS. Got sunburned bad on my forehead of all places. Never had that happen at a show before!

GK, are there many Anglias running around over there or did they mostly get sent over here for the drag racers?

Love car shows. My '55 took 2nd at Dallas 2 years runnin', Got told 100 times what to do to it to make it a 1st place street rod... but I like it as is. Haven't been to a show in more than 17 years. Got a LOT of work in place for when I retire... but sometimes I fear I'll be too tired when I do.

Lotto dream... one of every model '55 Chevy they made, from the C65 to the Corvette!

Gotta take it a step further... load 5 or 6 of them on a trailer behind the C65, drive up to Columbus for the Super Chevy Show, and park. Not enter... just park and watch. I guarantee a crowd.

Thanks for the PICS. I liked the Mustang drag car.....course I might be a little biased, as I have a 351 cleveland in my 1966 mustang drag/serious street car...maybe a little.
