I'm thinking it would be fun to be able to cast some hard cast pellets and not have to rely on retailers for resupply.

At less than 10 bucks for a tin of 500, life is too short to be screwing around casting them, IMHO.

I am a die-hard bullet caster, but I have to agree with jnyork on this one. It's not worth the time and trouble when they can be purchased so cheaply.

When I was a teen I came across an air bullet mold, a spitzer shaped thing in 177 and quite heavy.
I did cast a few but I was too young to do it well!

Something to think about

I responded to a want add recently for a old discontinued 150 gr SP RCBS mold, I sold the fellow the mold and asked what he wanted it for and below is what he wrote back.


"This bullet is the very best in air guns out to 300 yards in most pcp air guns will shot 1/2 minuet groups 10 shots off a bench at all ranges out to 300 with a velocity of 750-1000 fps on air .No powder primer or case. I believe with the prices going up this will be the next cheap way for the shooting public to shoot and hunt. I harvested a 31.250 inch mule deer this year with a RCBS 30 150 fp with an air gun shooting at 950 fps deer went 20 yds. And fell over dead perfect hart shot at 102 yds.

So maybe a solid base bullet could be made to work in a 22 or 177 air rifle.

I too would be interested in finding a way to cast a projectile that can be used in a .22 air rifle.

Not to drift too far off topic, but 2 days ago (Saturday), while at the range, a few air rifle shooters came to the rifle range house to warm up (it has a woodstove; the air rifle range is kept at 65 so the juniors don't sweat too much in their heavy padded competion coats) . I asked what brand of side cocking air rifle was winning the most these days. Then I was told, basically "Those things have been outdated for the last 25 years. All the compeditors these days use PCP air rifles, the kind you fill up with a scuba tank and compressor."

Well didn't that make me feel old. I replied that I would hate to be the slave of a gasoline or electric compressor. "OH, but there is a hand pump you can buy, it will fill the cartridge in the rifle with about 250 pump strokes." Just like Lewis and Clarke, I thought.

I was aware of these things, and the fact that you can buy them up to .35 cal at least. They give you multiple shots, certainly less per filling as the caliber increases. I was not aware that they were the state of the art target air rifles, just thought they were hunting tools.

I still would want a target grade side cocking .22 cal. Maybe just to return to the technology of my youth. But the idea of hunting with one is interesting. Wonder how long it will take to see them banned for anything but target competition.

Napoleon famously hated the things, and threatened to execute even fully uniformed enemies captured with them as spies. Probably our current versions of Napoleon and gang believe the same.

my thought about casting pellets was along the lines of "got a hot shot mold and liquid lead, I could dribble some lead in a pellet mold that resembles the shot mold".

I'm thinking about maybe treating myself to a non-fire-arm for the long voyage.
Is there a pistola verson that anyone knows about? long arms are unwieldy on small boats.

Here is a picture of a bullet from the RCBS 150SP mold I sold to be used as a 30 cal air rifle pellet.

Just for grins I posed a 20 cal air rifle pellet along with a lyman 225438 bullet along side the 30 cal.
