Why would I do that when I could do it myself?

A rich gold miner should remain a man of leisure, and hire out the dirty work  I'll drive your limo, too...

...well, it's about time! The U.S.S. Iowa (and many other ships) has had that for over 70 years:

Image

One key sounds the alarm ("SALVO SIGNAL", key #1); one key fires the big, 16" guns ("HAND FIRING", key #3); one key waits until the ship rolls back to where the targeting computer judges that the shot is on-target ("AUTOMATIC FIRING", key #2):

Wow...I just thought some dude was hunkered behind a great big Mercedez-Benz kind of crosshair or looking through some huge scope and seeing the terrorized look on the enemy faces... This...is just...a bank of switches... :|

Yeah - that's what I was trying to say... :D

Seriously though - I'd be happy to take the guy's .338 Lapua bolt-gun, even without the fancy-schmancy scope.

If it had a transmitter and GPS the game department could hook up to it and....
Say you find your Deer and put the cross hair on it and push the button....
The person at the local game department headquarters could
check to see if legal and if you had already filled your quota and then....
Transmits a signal to unlock your firing mechanism and allow you to take the shot...
COOL !!! Yes/No ??? :?

AJMD429,

I was surprised to find out about how those big guns are fired, too. They have rangefinders & RADAR, plus spotters. My friend, who served aboard the Iowa, gave me a tour, way back in 1989. I believe that those guns can be fired from 3 different locations of the ship, including the big turrets. He explained to me about the delayed firing (AUTOMATIC FIRING), related to a rolling, yawing ship, but he has further explained that each gun, within the turret, is on a delay, which allows for better follow-up shots. The image, below, shows turret 2 being fired with a delayed sequence among the barrels, and turret 3 with the delay disabled. Each of turret 2's barrels fire seperately, but turret 3 is firing all of them at once. Notice the shockwave & depression by each turret, and see how #3 has a much larger effect on its surrounding:

Oldtime technology still works. It is awesome! :!:

That system might be fun for the first 10 rounds, but after that...
