Texas Ranger Ira Aten with Whitney-Kennedy SRC Lever + bros.

Post by rangerider7 »

I just obtained this Aten family cart de vise photo Album. Ira and his two younger brothers all were Texas Rangers in the Frontier Battalion during the 1880-1890 period and later. They are all pictured in many different famous photos of the Texas Rangers. Ira had a book written about him and Cal and Eddie are in various books too. Eddie worked in the district of Judge Roy Bean. Cal was in the shootout where Capt. Frank Jones was killed. Ira is in the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame in Waco. I thought y'all might enjoy the photos. They are great pieces of history. I never understand how a family member could ever let something like this go but the story is unknown. I try and keep these items for historical purposes and will at a later date put them in a Ranger museum either in Waco or Kerrville, Texas. RR7

I have a real strong suspicion that whomever let it go may not have known what it was, who were in the pictures or how they may have been related. We went through a ton of pics after my MiL passed and probably less than a third had someone the surviving family could ID. Even fewer were marked with any information as to date, location or persons in the picture.

I'll have to find it again, but there was one picture of a turn of the century LEO of some sort in the pics we went through. It had a name IIRC but no one from either side of the family knew who it was or how he was connected to the family.

I have a small collection of pre-WWI up to WWI military pictures. I'm not related to any of them (AFAIK) but I suppose I'd better put something with them to explain that it's just a collection and not a family album...

Great photos! :D
Thanks,

BTW, Judge Bean's Jersey Lilly Saloon is still standing in Langtry. They have a pretty good visitors center too. I'll post this and go look for a URL to add to this reply.

Fantastic stuff Rangerider !

They're all great, but I love the Roy Bean photograph. You've got some real skill in sniffing out these treasures.
Thanks again for sharing these treasures. - DixieBoy
