If I Never Wanted One In The First Place, Why Now?

Post by Blaine »

I hope this doesn't go political, but..........

All the Riflemen I know seem to want to go get that Hi-Cap platform.....I never really wanted an EBR, so, why do I need one now? When I'm shooting, I seem to load them one or two at a time, and go slow....

It sure is handy not to have to work a bolt or reload every four or five shots when popping those pesky prairie dogs. (Although I do own rifles - even for prairie dogs - that I have to do both).

We've touched on this before. As always my response is that every non-felon, adult, citizen should own one. It is the current "militia" weapon.

I've been looking for a few minutes and I can't find that definition of 'militia' that includes a hunting component.

I have one but it's a match rifle for shooting Service Rifle and High Power. Friend of mine has a varminter, brought it out to shoot PD's, we spent half our time looking for his brass in the sagebrush. Thanks, I'll stick to my manually operated firearms.

The most practical reason for you might just be that if you get one or two of them NOW, in a year you can probably sell them and buy another levergun or two...!!! That's what I did last election cycle.

There's always this solution for those that require the proper finish. I'm thinking it's kind of heavy though. Turnbull AR in 308.

I don't particularly care for the EBR's for the most part, but I bought one. There are certain situations where they are the best choice. There's a reason the military uses those and not leverguns or bolt actions anymore. For pure enjoyment I'd rather have a Springfield M1-A, but for economical reasons and ammo capacity I went with an AR.

^^This is what I did after the last national election. I owned an AR for a couple years and sold it for a considerable profit after Obama was elected. Then I bought a .44 mag levergun, a Henry .22 levergun, and a Remington 870 with the money. Semi-autos are fun, but the fun quickly wears off for me when I'm paying for the ammo. I also reload so I couldn't stand trying to track down all that flying brass. So in the end, the "black rifles" leave me feeling indifferent.
On a side note, I find it interesting four years after Obama was elected and the fear buying that was going on then, now my local Walmart carries numerous AR clones and advertises all the tacticool accessories. Go figure!

I don't.

I'm too old to go about committing combat scenarios and playing shoot 'em up games. I did that back in the 70s and 80s and had fun for a while. Now I look at it this way. I buy what I enjoy and if TSHF and we end up in a TEOTWAWKI scenario then there will be plenty of military type rifles around. Not that I believe it will come to that before I take my dirt nap.

Blaine, I never really wanted and certainly never needed an AR-15. But, after my years of badmouthing the M-16, and then my boys using issued M-4's and finding them pretty reliable, they decided to get me one.

As you know, I'm a southpaw and one of my biggest complaints about the M-16 (no, not an A1 with the cartridge deflector) was getting nailed with hot brass. So the kids picked up a lefty Stag. I immediately noticed two things, beyond the obvious, first it was much heavier than I remembered, and the barrel was thicker.

I've got to say that the Stag has been reliable (hey, it's got about 40 years of improvement over the one I was issued). And, it didn't string shots as the barrel heated up as much. So the thicker barrel and the other improvements have made a pretty good difference.

But back to your question, "Why Now?", well as an old friend of our's said "Because you can". And because in the near future, maybe you can't.

In New York you can use an AR15 for deer hunting.(5rd mags)
These guns are extremely accurate.Follow up shots are amazingly fast and staying on target.
Neck shots on deer with the Federal 60gr Nosler Partitions flat just put them down.
Being that these guns(least my Match Colts)hunting deer say in the big woods(not a lot of brush) in the accuracy dept.is astounding they work well.

Probably my next gun will be a .308 in an AR platform.
I shot mine today and every time how accurately these guns shoot with open sights blows me away.
Here is why I say this------I took tennis ball sized bull target out back(50yds)want it zero'd at 50yds(normally is 100yds with 55gr FMJ handloads)took 2 shots with the expensive Federals.First shot(6'oclock )just in bull, made 4 clicks elevation "up"second shot (exactly dead nuts windage and dead nuts center. I am good-----they are that good.and I even had to wait both times because wind was blowing pretty good(waited for pauses of wind)I am extremely confident, trigger pulled(whatever down)I also use the smaller aperture even when in woods.

I know guys taking deer(shooting behind shoulder)with these better constructed bullets and they seem to work very well with the guys I am talking to.

Truth is-----not very sporting though--------------I would bet say at 50yds (heart shot)I could get off at least 3(well placed) before Bambi flies th coop.Maybe more???
Again-----that is not my way-----for me its good neck shots(with above mentioned ammo)
This year I am actually thinking about it-----thats why I had it out---and just dumped $62 on another 2 boxes of shells!

I bought my first one (Noveske) about 6 months ago. It's nothing more than a range toy, but a real fun one. I sent it back to have it reconfigured, from a shorty carbine into an SPR, and it's really accurate now.

Well, as you say, ...if in the past you knew you never really wanted one, ...then logic would seem to argue that if you don't know why you would need one now, don't worry about it. Seems your "one or two at a time, and go slow" works well enough for you. Case closed. No thanks needed.

Is a Garand an EBR? The thought of acquiring a EBR has crossed my mind for several years. But, there was always something more important. And now? It's just so close to the acronymn for equipment that the Gov't seems set to shove down my throat that I'm reluctant/hesitant/angry/loath to go along.

Blued/CCH steel and walnut. There's more than the mere practicality involved.

I got one. It is a fine peice, but just don't appeal to me. I doubt I'll sell it but I rarely shoot it. I went shooting this afternoon and took my 357 revolver and my 357 leveraction. From an effeciency standpoint they are a great rifle and I'll never knock someone for wanting one, and will probably always have one, but it is my least shot rifle and will most likely remain that way.

Actually, there are a couple of different brass catchers that you can use to catch it when it ejects but, I just lay a tarp next to my shooting mat and rarely lose or have to look for any. Don't know about your friend's rifle but my DPMS 24" Bull "Varminter" is incredibly accurate. Up to 300 yards, you virtually cannot miss (six to nine inches of prairie dog sticking up above the ground). Well worth the possibility of losing a few pieces of brass.

Honestly, neither of my ARs are any worse at throwing brass than my M1 Carbine or Garand, or most of my semi-auto pistols. I know, revolvers don't have that problem.

The most practical reason for you might just be that if you get one or two of them NOW, in a year you can probably sell them and buy another levergun or two...!!! That's what I did last election cycle.
I'll tell ya...I'm selling right now...trying to pare down to fit into a nice Air-Stream, or reasonable facsimile thereof......This is someday, not real soon.
friend of mine just did the Air-stream thing (1985, 31ft of shiny aluminum). he sold the house, sold his stuff, i helped him go over his guns and he kept what he thought he would need--one Rem. 870 12ga., one Tikka 30-06, one CZ 452 .22 rifle, one Ruger Mark I w/ government barrel, one CZ 9mm, one S&W 638 (38 snub), and his S&W 629 in 44 mag. he also simplified his reloading equipment. what was interesting is that he decided not to keep any of his AR's and related stuff.

for me, i'm not into the AR Platform, i just bought my second 30/30 levergun... )

'Nevva' wanted the black plastic AR types. A few yeras ago, I did buy a Springfield Armory M1A on a whim at a very good price. Broibgs back memories -- good and bad.

But what I have always wanted is the Ohio Ordnance BAR semi-auto version....

There's always this solution for those that require the proper finish. I'm thinking it's kind of heavy though. Turnbull AR in 308.

ARs are fun to shoot, the ammo is inexpensive and accurate, handloads are easy for with a wide variety of bullet styles and weights, and they can be customized almost any way you'd like with literally thousands of different parts.

Not as pretty as the Turnbull AR, but mine fits in with my walnut and steel motif.

However, I do have a middy carbine that is more the EBR look too.

Of course, some people do go a bit overboard customizing them. (Yes, there's an AR under all that stuff somewhere!)

What, no bayonet?? Thats what our rookies show up with after the academy. After a while they start selling off all the junk and stick with a decent light and eotech type sight.

A Garand is an honest to goodness ASSAULT WEAPON, a semi-automatic highpowered rifle designed for military use in combat.

I think it would 'qualify'.
