6X6 Bull Elk
We hunted the drought stricken Huerfano River breaks in southeast Colorado for 6 days this week before I got a shot at a decent bull. We bumped this one from his bed and he ran directly away up a slope so I had to use "Texas Heart Shot" to stop him at just over 100 yards with my Ruger 77 in ,338 Win mag. This is the first time that I have pulled the trigger on an elk and I am very pleased with the results:
Me with mandatory orange gear:
Friend and guide Barney with a good view of the antlers:
I will write the story up for the DWWC Newsletter and will then post the story here.
Before you ask, I left myWinchester 1895 .405 at home because it has a strain gage on it for load testing AND because the .338 Win Mag was a better fit to the terrain where shots beyond 300 yards may be required.

Nice, crs. Looking forward to your report here of the DWWC newsletter story. Per chance, do you know Dewey Dalton?

Re: 6X6 Bull Elk
86er,
remember that old log with several chain saw cuts in it where you shot your bull in 2010?
My bull died and the photos were taken within 10 yards of that log!
I think we now know one good area to still hunt when the wind is right!
PS I have cleaned the Colorado dust from your Tuffpak and can return it whenever we can sync schedules.

Very nice and congratulations,
How is the meat from Elk? I have never had the chance to try it, I have heard its not like whitetail.
Looks like you didn't lose all that much from having to shoot it where you did.

The meat from Sighthunter's elk was real good. It is not as tough as a whitetail, and tastes better. Not quite like beef, but better than most beef.
CRS, that was good shooting. That tuffpack has traveled some. I borrowed it for my trip to Africa, and it was the perfect case. Having a fellow Levergunner who can help out is a bonus.

Marc,
My guide now lives up near Rifle and I hear the place is crawling with elk. Good luck.

Coincidentally, for dinner tonight we are having rolled elk roast with all the trimmings. I will try to remember to take a pictures and post it, but we have been sipping a bit of red table wine, so,,,

Cimarron Red,
yes, southeast of there, maybe 10 miles east of I25.
The meat was processed and the rack will be mounted in Colorado City and and brought to Texas later this year when we get together for a hunt.

Re: 6X6 Bull Elk
CRS,
That's about 50 miles from me. You were likely near where the Cucharas dumps into the Huerfano. I haven't been in that area a lot, but upstream and down from there a good bit.

Re: 6X6 Bull Elk
CRS, it is good to hear the elk are in good shape in the NW area. Maybe Fordwannabe and I will get one too. Thanks for the good wishes.
It looks like that bull did OK in spite of the drought.

Re: 6X6 Bull Elk
That looks delicious!! I see some mushrooms in there also, I found some golden chanterelles, black trumpets and some hedgehogs that would go perfect with elk or any other game.
