I saw this on AR15.com and had to copy it here. A fantastic story!!
A gentlemen went to the forums for a shot in the dark trying to find his Dad's M1 Garand... and well... just read it here.

Thanks Steve. I did OK watching that till I got to the video, then the screen kept going blury. My dad still remembered the ser. Number of the Garand he was issued in 1944. That really brought back memories.

Wow, to find one Garand out of all the ones made, what are the odds on that one? Makes me wonder. I once used a Remington Rand 1911 to good account. I wonder if it made it's way back to this side of the ocean. Sadly, I have no idea what the serial number is, so there isn't even a remote possibility of getting any info on it. It wasn't issued (well at least not to me) it was passed from one guy to another. When I left I passed it along. I'd like to think it's still in some GI's holster doing what it was meant to do. Heck, if it's not, it ought to be in a hermatically sealed glass case with a sign "Break glass in time of war".

Re: What A Thread On CMP Forum!!!
I doubt my Dad ever tried to remember the serial number for the M-1 Garand he was issued as a replacement in 1945. He specifically complained it oozed hot cosmoline all over his hand in his first fire-fight, and the rear sight rattled badly.
He was superstitious, and refused to pick up a rifle that had been dropped by a soldier who might have died soon after dropping it. He did talk his best friend into doing just that, though, and then taking his friend's rifle. His friend was not superstitious, and evidently the trade did not harm him. I met that man, when he came to visit Washington D.C., and my Dad, in 2006. He seemed just fine then.

Very nice, I always see and hear people looking for their issued M1's and it's great to hear somebody who found one. Great son to do all that for his Dad.

It's a great story…. but it does make me wonder; how many other guys are there? How many others was it also "their rifle".
Slow is just slow.
Re: What A Thread On CMP Forum!!!
Undoubtably there were others that the rifle was issued to, but how many still have score sheets with "their" rifle's serial number on them? In the three years that I was in, I was issued three M16s and four 1911s. I don't have a clue what the serial numbers were of any of them.cas wrote:It's a great story…. but it does make me wonder; how many other guys are there? How many others was it also "their rifle".
I think that since he actually kept paperwork to prove that that rifle was issued to him, it is HIS rifle.
