OT- I made my bed...
...and now I just laid down in it.
Fellers, I am a good example of a bad example. A couple bad choices came back on me tonight.
I went out Saturday with my ROA and did some shooting with my buddy Dave. No big deal, I cleaned it and dried it off real good. The oiling had to wait because I was not at my house and had none on me. Because of my wife's complete disdain for any gun oil or cleaner I decided to wait until this morning to oil it up. Geuss what? I forgot.
It dawns on me that it has not been oiled at about 8:00pm so I went at it. Magicaly there were deposits of rust in all 6 chambers, around the throat, the cylinder pin, the holes in the frame and cylinder where the pin goes through, along with a couple nooks and crannies. I was successful in removing 98% off of the gun and 95% from the cylinders.
My wife got in a bad mood cause I told her I HAD to get it clean NOW. I no longer cared for whether or not she liked the aromas.
Inevitably I ended up using the closest clean towels in the area I was working. She did not care for that at all either. I have a pet peive for not being able to use towels for their inherint purpose, cleaning/drying stuff.
I told her I could get new towels to replace the old ones that got grease/powder-goo/rust on them. She didn't care. I wanted to raise my voice and tell her that the towels didn't cost nearly as much as the gun did but, I never told here how much I paid for the gun.
So here I sit; tired, sleepy, back hurting, a nice gun completely disassembled, wife went to bed mad at me and I don't have a leg to stand on because it is all my own doing.
I know I may be preaching to the chior here, but, as much as I hate it, learning things the hard way gives a better chance of not repeating them.
I tell you all the truth: You can bet your bottom dollar I will never make any of the above mistakes again. Ever.
Thank you for listening to my ramblings of lessons learned.

Yep like my preacher used to say, "Not everything you have to say is worth hearing." Not that you didn't have valid points. You can easily win the battle but lose the war.

I can see you are in the early stages of being married. We all go through that. After a while, we just start doing what we want whether the other one likes it or not. I simplified the whole process by claiming most of the basement for myself and having all of my cleaning supplies right there. Then I have this mega-watt fan that sucks out all fumes, etc. (especially after eating brocolli and fried onions)

Sorry about your ROA. Glad my wife isn't picky about most chemical odors.
As as been said you need to get some dedicated cleaning supplies, and your own place in the house. To hell with the dog house idea, you live there too.

If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.
With my wedding coming up in 2 months I will have to deal with some of this...
My thoughts are:
You need a space to call your own (every man/woman does) where the odors will present minimum problem.
Collect your old t-shirts & socks as they wear out and put them in a bag for use in gun cleaning. Works great for me.
I can understand your wife's aversion to chemical smells (some give me headaches and cause sinus problems) however she should understand that your ROA is an expensive piece of equipment that needs to be maintained properly and that sometimes chemicals must be used. How would she feel if you pitched a fit over the smell of Shout or Spray-n-Wash that she needed to use to prevent a stain ruining her favorite dress/blouse/whatever? She may argue that its not the same but for the sake of this discussion it is. They are both things that each of you value and wish to properly care for.

If she told me she didn't like the aroma of the things I need to clean my guns, I'd tell her the air outside is free, and someone needs to clean up after the dogs.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Where is it written that only wives' feelings, likes, and dislikes, take center stage? Place of your own? Good luck with that, it's ALL there space.
I don't know, must be getting old and cranky , but I'd of told her "The smell won't kill you, and if you don't like it, go to bed.
She'd still be mad at you, but at least you'd have marked part of your turf.

I paid good money for those towels and wouldn't want them used that way either! Get an old t-shirt and have at it. Oh, and since when does soapy hot water and gun oil stink?

The Women have NO problem making life miserable when WE want to clean a gun or work on the truck or anything MAN related. Yet they think nothing of using nail polish remover or nail polish or any manner of cleaners, in the house when WE are home, and it STINKS. I was once out in the shed 100' from the house painting tractor parts and the Wife stood on the back deck having a fit because She could smell the paint.
Now two of my brothers in law and myself all have a "MAN ROOM" in the barn or garage the Wife has NO SAY'SO or input at all about what happens inside, and if they don't like it they are asked politely to stay in the house. The best MAN ROOM in the Family has gas heat, air conditioning gun-racks a fridge, and recliners if you need to stay over. .Jim.

Yeah, I live in a 30'x24' house. She hates Rem-Oil, Break-free and Hoppes #9. All staples of my gun cleaning. I do need an area to myself to keep all my gun goodies and my tools.
It is the day after now and I feel much better. The Old army will heal and my wife has gotten over it.
To be honest I am not sure how you are supposed to get the inside of the gun clean without taking it apart? The do-dads pop right off w/out any tools, but the frames are held together good and when you pop them apart the guts spill. I am not seeing the ROA as a service friendly gun at the moment.
To be really honest(and humble), I might get the ding on the barrel fixed and the whole enchilada re-blued. Then shelf it until I learn to take better care of my equipment. It won't hurt it to sit on my shelf in 99% condition until called upon again.

I can only offer this. I've been married to the same woman for 35 years this June. 6 ft tall with flaming red hair and green eyes and a temper to match. Greatest love of my life. She respects my addiction to firearms, hunting and Musky Fishing. She has her own guns and is a darn fine shot. She supports my hobbies and I support hers. I maintain her fleet of old Singer Sewing Machines (yeah, the steel ones that weigh a ton and never wear out) and I Know more about quilting and embroidery then the average guy. I could not be happier!
