Wouldn`t use a steel ram rod in a rifle unless it was a emergency, we figured if a person slipped and stuck the barrel in the mud or snow it might come in handy to clear it. They are a tight fit and rattle so not real impressed.

Well thank you much Pitchy, maybe I'll take you up on that offer. How about I shoot it from Mat to December and you can shoot it the rest of the year.

I enjoyed that shoot-out, Pitchy! Them hostiles are on the run for sure now. I like that little pistol spin at the end as well. Nice touch.

Slug your bore and i bet it is a tad oversize, that has been the big complaint with these. Try a 460 cast bullet of 250 to 300 grains.

Sorry friend, I meant a bit more power/powder.

I was kinder expecting a bit more recoil in the video, it just made me wonder if it needs a bit more powder what with you mentioning your not to happy with the groups.

Forgive my ignorance Pitchy, I never shot a 76 or that cartridge! Just thinking out loud thats all :)

Loaded up some 300 grain cast bullets over 37 grains of 3031 today, they seem to shoot pretty good with no signs over over pressure.
That load doesn`t leave much air space which i like, anyone loading the 45-60 in that range.

Also i slugged the bore by accident and it is 457 and that`s what my sizing die is so good there.
I got lucky, i loaded a couple with some 25 year old reloader seven and the first shot only made it half way down the barrel.
Pulled the rest of them and picked up another can of 3031.

Pitchy, I think it would be worth trying those new cast bullets with a faster powder, which may seal up the throat and bore a bit better. That will leave more airspace, however. If you have 5744, you might want to try a few loads of that to see how it works. If not, then 2400 would be worth a try. 2400 will give you a sharper pressure spike than 5744 and either will give you a sharper spike than IMR 3031.

Hey Pitchy, how stiff is the hammer spring and dust cover on that one of yours? There's one at the local shop here in the Tucson and it's just stiff as heck. The main spring seems heavy, and the dust cover is rather hard to slide back and forth. The only thing I have to compare it to is the 1873, so I don't know if they're supposed to be like this.

Thanks,
Oly

Will be doing a little tune up work on the 76 next few days, ordered a lighter lever saftey spring and will be thinning out the hammer and trigger springs. Also new buckhorn sight should be here soon .
So hopefully between a better sight and a better trigger pull the groups will get a little better.
If anyone is interested. :)

A lighter trigger pull and a better sight can make a big difference. My original '76 had a very heavy trigger pull. I practically have to hook a cable up from the trigger to the hitch on the back of my truck. (well ..... I might be exaggerating a bit, but it is dadgummed hard to pull). I'll look forward to your further updates.

Pitchy, I tried 3031 in my Chaparall 45-75 carbine and did not like the results. 45 grains under a 300 grain Laser Cast LFN gave only 1366 FPS with absolutely abysmal results. The cases were badly sooted and the bullets were all over the place. Next I went with IMR 4198. MUCH better. 40 grains, same bullet, gave 1773 FPS average and was VERY accurate. Clean cases and very easy ejection. I'm gonna do the same load only with 250 Barnes TSX. That ought'ta make a A No 1 pig banger. :)

On second thought i`m going to see if i can find a can of that powder, i have some data that Shasta sent me showing 29.0 grains at 1366 fps.with imr. 4198
Now that i think of it my 45-70`s haven`t been all that accurate with 3031 either and lot of unburt powder in the barrel.
