.348 A-frame

Post by Rimfire McNutjob »

A post by 86er a while back alluded to a possible new Swift A-frame bullet being available for the .348 WCF. I followed up with an inquiry to Swift recently and they got back to me today. The tooling is complete and they're waiting on material. They expect to have them in distribution in about 2 months. These will be 200 grain bullets.

While I was hoping to hear of something in the 230 to 250 grain range, I'm still happy to hear that we'll be getting another premium grade bullet for the .348 very soon. I suspect that it may not be too awful difficult to make a higher weight version if their 200's do well enough. I've got no information on pricing so we'll have to see where it lands.

I know, I know, what kind of Neanderthal is still shooting the .348, blah, blah, blah. Sadly, we 71 shooters are still around making due with our Winchester brass from the 1990's and that last factory run of Silver Tip from the mid-2000's. You'll miss us one day when we finally fall off the edge of this flat Earth.

The Barnes 250 grs Fn is my standard load, but I think I would like to test the North Fork 230 grs. http://www.northforkbullets.com/magento ... 0-fp.html/

The A-Frame seems to be a fine bullet for deer, but perhaps a bit too light for heavy game as moose and brown bear. Nevertheless, any new .348 bullet is welcome! :)

Well, apparently the pricing is available. They are $63.99 per 50 at Midway though they are marked as not yet available.

Yes ,we Neanderthal's are still hunting and shooting our71/.348's bro,and I might say WE love it.I have amassed enough 348 componets to last 2 life times and when a good deal pops up I still continue to buy the stuff.Would not trade my 71's for anything, they are the very BEST. !!!!!!
Glad Swift is making a new .348 bullet available. The old one's never say die....... :D :D
I currently have 910 cases of Remington and Winchester brass and 3331 bullets of various manufacture,Hornady,Barnes,Remington,Speer and Winchester and 100 rounds of Winchaster factory ammo........

Good news for sure, I know I love my 71, just a cool gun, and a cool round, I still can't believe it almost went the way of the dodo.

$1.00+/bullet. Nice to have another option, but I just bought 1000 250gr GC bullets from a local fellow for $95. I'm loading tomorrow night, anyone have some favorite cast bullet loads for 250-255 gr bullets? With Merrit eyepieces on my receiver sights I've worked up loads for my 71's ( 200gr Hornady bullet)that will give me on good days (my good days) 3 shot groups 1.5" or less, frequently with 2 shots touching at 100meters and 5 shot groups 2" or less consistently. Interestingly each rifle needs it's own load to do this and one rifle's best load frequently shoots like you know what in other 71's. So I've loaded up boxes of 50 of each rifle's favorite load and when the weather improve I going to chronograph them. My Barnes bullets are too pricey to do much experimenting with. If I ever make a "big hunt" with a 71 I;m going to work up some loads. Like when I win the lottery and go on annual Kodiak bear hunts  Any 250gr cast bullet loads anyone? Thanks.

What I have used in the past when I have to crawl in a alder thicket AA 4350 55 grains pushing a 245 gr Beartooth Bullet, load is in AA load manual but for a 250 gr bullet. From the Lyman #45 load manual 46 gr of 3031 for a 255 gr GC bullet for 2212 fps never tried the 3031 load. my elk bullet is a hdy 200 gr pushed by 53 gr of IMR 4895 for 2450 fps or AA 4350 62 grs for 2520 fps both loads are in the afore mentioned load manuals. danny

Big Bear,

According to what I have read about loading for the .348 WCF in the Winchester Model 71 ( see the writings of Ken Waters) you are not going to get nice little groups if you try to drive cast lead, gas check 250 grains bullets much more than 1600 fps. Here is a load that gives me good accuracy and is pleasant to shoot off the bench: Winchester cases and primers, 24 1/2 grains of IMR-4198, 250 grain cast lead, gas check Lyman #350482 bullets. Bullets crimped with Lee crimping tool. Over all cartridge length 2.79 inches. Five shot groups at 50 yards ran around 1 1/2 inch. Muzzle velocity averaged around 1600 fps.

Give it a try and good luck.
