Since I was the oldest burning the trash and putting the garbage in the lime barrel were my jobs once I was 7 or 8. I hated it when winter came and it was dark by the time supper was over, there were always night noises that were spooky to a kid that age. Especially those darn coyotes. Now I would love to be able to spend a quiet 1/2 hour out in the dark watching the trash burn. Funny how your priorities change with age. Live too far into civilization to get away with it now.

Heavy Stainless. A regular 55g barrel wouldn't hold up to cutting out the air slats, much less 1500+deg fire...

We use the 55 gallon barrels. Every one gets a couple cylinders full of 44s for air holes. They last a year, then you get a new one, which is usually found very cheaply or even free. Last summer at an auction sale, I bought a pickup load of barrels for $5.
Back in Indiana on the home place we have a burning container my dad got from a strip mine. Wide at the top and angles narrower to the bottom. Heavy duty and I think stainless steel with very narrow openings. Just the right height to run wheel barrow up to, catch the edge with top edge of wheel barrow and tip-in the load.
After about 20 years I've had to overhaul it a few times but can't think of a better burner. With it's wide top it's a lot easier to get sticks, etc. into than a regular barrel. Have a rather heavy 'lid' for it to help contain the fire, esp. during dry weather and lid also helps to keep it dry inside.
