OT - Range Report: Spy Satellite Shoot-Down
Raw DOJ video showing missile launch and intercept of the school bus sized (NRO?) satellite reported to be traveling at 17,000MPH (~25,000 FPS?). It's been described as shooting down a bullet with another bullet. Hmmm... how much Unique to you figure it would take to get a .45c 250gn cast lead up to 25,000FPS??? Might have to go to a 7.5" barrel instead of the 5.5"...

Thankfully they successfully intercepted it. Given the proper support, our military can do amazing things. There was much talk on radio this morning of the implications of a miss.
I have to agree with many that the shoot down was less about a container of Hydrazine re-entering the atmosphere and more about showing "others" that were watching that we can and will shoot down things that may get lobbed our way.
Fine work.

It's probably listed as a Ruger/TC ONLY load...don Tomás wrote:Hmmm... how much Unique to you figure it would take to get a .45c 250gn cast lead up to 25,000FPS??? Might have to go to a 7.5" barrel instead of the 5.5"...

well the chinese did it and now the americans have. Any bets on how long it will take the ruskis to have a go at proving they can do it too?
Who else will get in on the starwars race?

The US Air Force did it first over 20 years ago. An F-15 from Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., shot down a solar observatory satellite with an ASM-135 ASAT on Sept. 13, 1985, the only time a satellite has been destroyed by an air-launched missile.gundownunder wrote:well the chinese did it and now the americans have. 25,000 fps
347,000 ft./lbs. of energy
7,355 grains of Unique
In a 48 oz. revolver the recoil would be approximately 40,631 ft./lbs.
The killing power at the muzzle would be 9,150
The bullet would penetrate over 12 feet of ballistic gelatin
The wound volume would be over 6 cu. feet
All from a 5.5" Colt SAA
Caution: This is a maximum load. Start low and gradually work up.
Also, the load would have to be compressed a little.

+1.............There's nothing like 'serving notice" when other counties are following thier respective adgendas.Rimfire McNutjob wrote: There was much talk on radio this morning of the implications of a miss.
Sometimes I think they forget that we were prancing around on the moon around 40 years ago (when they're just now working up a travel plan!)
Politicians and diapers both require frequent changing for the EXACT same reason!
