Savage 99

I saw in a pawn shop a Savage 99 in 30-30. It was about $550. Sure a temptation to get that rifle.

If it's in any kind of decent shape I'd say go for it. Seems like 99's are getting more spendy all the time. At least what I've seen for decent, no tang cracked, beat up examples.

You know, you could spend half that for a decent Marlin 336 chambered in 30-30 Winchester, and it would be lighter, handier, and a lot more reliable.

Guy behind me at the Wanamacher last weekend had a 99 take-down in 250-3000, super nice. Sold it for $850! I thought he was too cheap on it.

There you go - a reason - and quick too. Every levergunner has to have a reason ready to justify that new levergun acquisition. I had to use one just two hours ago when I told my wife I'd just bought a Ruger 99/22M.

I know, I know, we really don't need a reason, especially among this group, but I mean, just in case you need one. You know?

BTW, I run into 99 Savages a lot around here. And I've seen 30-30 and 300s go for around 400 bones.

Don't understand this. I have a model 99 Featherweight takedown made in 1913. In .303 Savage. I have 4 Marlins and really like them. they are great guns but not in the league as the Savage,not even close.....if the 99 was introduced tomorrow it would be a marvel of engeneering. most people who see it taken down in a few seconds cannot believe it is near 100 years old.
An Older Friend of Ours sold 11 99's last summer at His estate sale/Auction and from what I saw the price is only going UP. the bidding was hot and heavy

Every one I see around my parts is either real spendy or a beat up junker. I NEVER find a nice one at less than $600 and usually it's a lot more.

Perhaps 99 Savages chambered in the cartridges mentioned above sell for a lot more in your part of the country than they do in mine. I have owned a half dozen of the 99 "marvels of engineering" and have yet to find one that was more reliable than a Marlin 336, however it is easy to find one that costs a lot more.

Let me try to explain my response to the original post.

A Marlin 336 chambered in 30-30 Winchester can be obtained for $250 to $300. $550 divided by half is $275.00. So I'm not too far off there.

Most Marlin 336s are lighter in weight than a Savage 99, and most Marlin's chambered in 30-30 Winchester come with 20" barrels and tend to be shorter and handier than the Savage. In addition, I find the point of balance, at mid-receiver, to favor the Marlin over the Savage, this also adds to the "handier" side of the equation.

Now, what about reliability. Perhaps I overstated the Marlin's reliability over the Savage when it comes to the 30-30 Winchester. However, Savage 99s are notorious for weak extraction. So if one loads their cartridge just a tad above the factory loading, but still within book pressure levels, the 99 can have difficulty extracting the cartridge and the extractor will often slip off the rim and leave the cartridge in the chamber. I have had this happen a number of times on two different Savage Model 99s I’ve owned.

Like I said above, I have owned a half a dozen Savage Model 99s, and still own one. And two I sold I'd like to get back (a 308 Winchester I bought for $165 in 2005 and a 243 Winchester I bought for $175 a year earlier). I hunted with 99s when I was a kid and have had a long appreciation of them. However, I am unable to ignore their short comings. So, when someone says he's tempted to buy one chambered in 30-30 Winchester for the price asked, I thought I's suggest a viable option. Now, if he would have said I'm tempted to by a Savage 99 chambered in 250-3000 for $550, I'd ask him "what in the world are you waiting for - a written invitation?" And then ask for the phone number of the vender so I could buy it.

So, I'm sorry I confused you. I hope this clears it up a bit.

I talked to this Old Gent a few weeks ago and was suprised to learn that He still had a few 99's including a 250-3000 He showed Me several years ago. it has a Marbles peep and a King front sight with a tiny mirror behind it. I may have a chance to get that one if I bide My time. .

Nice. Jump on that one if you get a shot. I consider the 250-3000 Savage and the 358 Winchester the Crown Jewels of the Savage 99.

I guess I did pretty good lately. Last spring I picked up a 99F in 300 savage for $325 and this summer i got a 99c in 308 by trading a Stoger Condor o/u 12 ga that I paid $300 for and found I didn't like. The owner of the 99c liked it and it was an even trade. I might be tempted by a 30-30 model 99, but i really like my model 94 in that cal.
