Re: Scope
Leapers makes passable scopes. They are not too expensive. I think they are sold now under the "UTG" name. You can find them on Amazon.com.

Re: Scope
I've never owned a Weaver or Tasco or Bushnell that I've been 'disappointed' in - I don't throw mine off horseback into frozen streams or anything, though.

Yep, that Burris that Carl "new pig hunter" pointed you at. That's a heckuva buy on a heckuva scope. I've got several of 'em.

Re: Scope
I have the Tasco on my bolt action .308 hunting rifle but want a up to 12 power of better quality. The suggestions are a big help. I am thinking also of "mil-dot" type. Mostly want more than the 9 power I have now.

Re: Scope
I've had good luck with the Bushnell Trophy series (have 3) and with their Elite 3200 series (2).
Re: Scope
If you can stand kicking it up to about $200 , the new Redfield 4-12 is a very nice scope for the money !
I have one on my Ruger #1B 270 Weatherby . My gunsmith buddy has one on his Springfield M1A also !
Both scopes have held up nicely .
And while not a 4-12 I also have a new Redfield 3-9 thats been on my newest 444 thats set up for 400 grain cast only . I've maybe put 300-400 of my full house 400 grain loads thru this rifle scope combo with no ill effects to the scope . So again thats not one of the 4-12's but it should say a good bit about the recoil reliability of this product !

Re: Scope
About Twenty years ago I spent $25 on a Bushnell 3-9 x 40 Sportview.
At the time I thought it would be a temporary fix for an old Redfield that had failed.
Eighteen years later I took it off Grandpa's 03 Sporter and repalced it with a
Vintage Bushnell Scope Chief II that Bushnell repaired for free.
Those folks have a forever customer here.

Re: Scope
Yep, thats about the limit, anything less is junk. While a cheaper scope will work OK on lighter recoiling rifles in warm weather----when your at the gunclub-------they can't take the abuse or the cold of a hunt.6pt-sika wrote:If you can stand kicking it up to about $200
I destroyed an old Redfield and a 10 cent Bushnell on my M1-A. I finally broke down and bought a mil-dot Nikon.------------Sixgun

Re: Scope
good mildot Nikon or similar sounds good for the .308. I have a 4x bushnell on the Marlin 30-30 may stick with it .
Re: Scope
I've got a Nikon 3-9x40 that's been on my .30-06 TCR'83 for like 25 years.
Glass is clear as a summer morning. Holds zero like it was nailed down.
Not my most used rifle, but like Doc AJ said, I've never thrown it off a horse or in the creek, I've never butt-stroked a red-eyed charging commie, or used it to pry open a crate to get more ammo.
Still, it seems fairly reliable.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Re: Scope
If your having to spend $200 on up to get a good reliable scope than you have the worst luck ever. I've had good luck with lesser scopes and have never had one fail in the woods. I hunt rough terrain in rain, snow, temps below zero, etc and until a recent $150 2-7x Redfield the most I had ever spent on a scope was $110. As far as recoil, I've had two $60 BSA 1.5-4's mounted on 12ga's and neither has ever failed.Sixgun wrote:Yep, thats about the limit, anything less is junk. But I have lived and learned some over the years. I've learned to avoid China made scopes. The Chinese may be fine at making a Fisher Price toy but they pretty well suck at making scopes. Not that they have been unreliable but because of a whole set of other issues they have. Stick with U.S.A., Japan and some Filipino scopes an you'll be fine.

Re: Scope
Redfield 2x7 is available for that kind of money. It should be just fine (I have one and like it).

If that power range wont do, look at any of the Nikons available for the money you have to spend. They work just fine as well (I own several Nikons also).
