Deer opener Saturday

Post by Pitchy »

Will be hittin the woods carrying a lever rifle and a SAA, gonna see if the 1895 Marlin 45-70 can make something of itself.
Or if one gets too close may try the Ruger 44 on one. :)
No snow yet so kinda noisy walking se raked a path to a couple hangouts so i can sneak in.

Opener? All our seasons closed last weekend. In CA 'ya must hunt in temps between 80-110º. There will be NO deer huntin' in late fall when it cools a bit. :(

Good luck. It opens here this weekend for black powder. Opened last weekend for rifle in another zone just a couple miles from my home. I have the week off and intend to hunt both zones. I didn't see any deer in the rifle zone but saw one near my house when I was looking for partridge on Sunday afternoon.

Good luck! The Texas bow season has just completed and our MLDP area has been open since Oct 1, but the regular rifle season in the Northern Zone opens this Saturday as well. I will be out there with a home-made .50 cal muzzleloader ... and if that doesn't smoke, a Rem 81 in 300 Sav.... and if it still has a clean bore, an 1886 in 45-70 will get a turn. I hope you score!

Headed out just after light and only made it to the edge of the lawn and there was a small doe eating acorns about 30 yards from me. She was facing me and the wind was at my back so she was alert, the brush was so thick i couldn`t find a hole to shoot through. She finally winded me and split and couldn`t get a good shot, must of stood there five minutes watching her but couldn`t move.
Oh well bigger and better out there. :)

As I tried to sneak into my sitting spot (was pretty hard, ground was frozen and crunchy) I put one off. I could see the outline of the body but not enough to tell exactly and there were a lot of branches in the way. It gave a snort and trotted off. I waited around for 10 or 15 minutes and and started off again. I had a general idea of where it went. It was getting easier to be quiet as the frost melted. Suddenly a partridge took off out of a tree over me and up ahead I saw a white flag and another snort. I left the area so as not to push it to someone else and go back this afternoon.
When I got home the wife left a note saying we had no water. The pump died. Just finished installing a new one. In another hour or so I'll go back to my spot and sit till dark. Really nice day sunny and 40 degrees and a light breeze blowing the right way for me to enter the bush with the wind in my face.

Sad day in Runnels county. I took my Revelation 30-30 saw two nice deer at 300 yard so did not try a shot. I watched them for 30 minutes. Then I discovered that I had last years license and this years on the desk at home. :( Next week end Ill take the .308 and the correct current license. Or maybe some of that new Leverevolution ammo. :( :( :(

I returned to my hunting place in Runnels county with the Leverevolution 30-30 ammo and the proper license. I got a nice doe at 150 yards Friday Morning. I observed that the hornady ammo made small entrance hole and small exit hole. The deer dropped DOA. I had expected big expansion and a large exit hole. It sure was deadly. finally got photo for you

In thinking about the doe in Runnels co tx. We hunt on a place of 700 acres mostly grass pasture. The pickup is our blind. The deer are not afraid of pickup. I was in passenger side and had to shoot using left side, left eye and less than stable hold. i had to twist to shoot to the right rear. It is good to practice shooting "weak side" and odd rest. Photos later.Image
