Ruger lever gun-I am soooo weak

Post by Stan in SC »

I made up my mind two years or so ago that I was going to get rid of my Ruger 96/44 and have nothing further to do with .44 magnum lever guns.Accordingly I advertised it here and AJMD bought it and takes every opportunity to post a picture of it.But being the firmly resolved type that I am I just persevered and convinced self that I didn't miss it.
Then today a good friend walked into the shop and brazenly flaunted a really primo 96/44 that he wanted to sell.It was topped with a really nice condition older Weaver 2.5X scope.I resisted all day and he hung around all day and when I walked out the door at closing he stopped at his truck, turned and made a final offer that was just tooo good. Guess what,Andy?I bought another one. This is in really nice condition. The serial number shows it as being manufactured in 1997,the second year of production.
I guess I have proved once again that pretty women and lever guns are my greatest weaknesses.
No,I don't have pictures but it DID happen.Range report to follow next week.

Congrats, I kinda regret buying one when they were plentiful and cheap. Have fun and don't make the same mistake twice.

I just KNEW you'd come back to the Ruger-96 club...! 8)

Now you just have to get you ones in .22 LR, .22 WMR, and .17 HMR. Maybe .17 M2 even...!

I just wish they'd made them in .45 Colt, .32-20, or . . . (of course) . . . .480 RUGER. . .

When I bought this rifle I only gave passing inspection to the scope.Last night I gave it a good look and I am further tickled with the set up.The scope is an older Weaver K2.5-1.The optics are very clear and the scope is in really great condition. The scope does not however says "El Paso" on it.In my estimation this is the absolute perfect scope for this rifle.

Now i want one too

I gotta admit, i didn't care for them 15 years ago and they were not big sellers in my area, but now they have grown on me --- funny how that works

Gunbroker prices seem to start at $450 and go up from there

Monday morning dawned nice and a wee bit warmer than yesterday.I have been chomping at the bit to shoot the 96/44 so off to the gun club.I set up two targets. One at 50 yards and the other at 100 yards.Ammunition was Magtech factory loads. It only took five shots to get the little rifle hitting the 50 yard target 1" high so I moved to the 100 yard target and found I was hitting to the right.A little scope adjustment and three more rounds and I had it what I think is just right.I am 1" high at 100 yards.
The function was flawless and it actually felt good to shoot a .44 rifle.
Now I need to get this fine tuned to some hard cast 240 Grain loads.
