A couple odd spinning wheels

Post by Pitchy »

Couldn`t help myself had to show ya the last two spinners we built.
The first one is a Charkha wheel, Gandhi was known for these and his people.
The second one is a Chinese double spindle, the way it`s turned is different, ya kinda pedal it on the long stick.

I always thought there was only one type of spinning wheel till you came on board.
My girl friend has just started working in a wool shop and is thinking of taking up spinning, they have Alpacas by the shop too!

Will do Nath.
Joe the drive string rides on the white strings that zig zag back and forth on the spokes, pretty ingenious actually, the pressure outward of those strings keeps the drive string tight.

My Mom would get a kick out of all of your wheels. She has been spinning and weaving for years and has several wheels.

Pitchy,

You have a lot of knowledge about the old ways of doing things. Have you read any of the books on this subject? There was one book that was actually a series of books about how many things were done in the old days but I can't remember it's title. Maybe you or someone else here can.

A big attraction to me of the old ways is how they can make a person pretty self-sufficient. Also can allow one to live on a lot less money. And...if you're good enough at it bosses and employers become a thing of the past.

Have you made significant income from building or making old things like your spinning wheels?

Thanks gents.
Haven`t made any money on the spinning wheels yet, may sell some next spring.
I generaly end up giving most the things i make away because putting a smile on someones face puts one on mine.
I don`t worry about money, if i could i`d find a way not to need any of the stuff i would.
That might sound stupid but i`m tired of the world and its greed and selfishness and if i can show some light in a dark world that`s good enough for me.

Dang, sure wish i felt that way or my family cared that much to say that.
All they can do is be jealous, selfish, uncaring and ruin our lives.
Funny how people can be so nice, here, and so cruel other places isn`t it.
That`s why i posted the thanks thread because of how much everyone helps and cares about each other here.
On the other hand i understand it and why it`s the way it is, God says He stores our tears in a bottle and when we get to Heaven we will recieve joy for every one of them and more.
Thanks everyone.

Pitchy,
Well said. I'm with 'ya brother 100%. I am a firm believer that 75% of the people are no good predators that do not try to hide themselves. Another 15% are the same as the other 75% but are better at camouflage.

I have an aunt who was the rottenest *** in the world her whole life. She is 93 and still drives and takes no medication. My father, her brother, was a most trusting individual and did not make it out of his seventies. Same lifestyle, same Italian food, same upbringing---different personalities. Rotten people live long and there's a whole lot of truth to the old saying, "the good die young".

I believe it a "nature thingy".

It why I have reduced the people I deal with to less than the 4 fingers on one hand--I said "less". Its closer to the number of thumbs I have on one hand.

Play it smart--let the last laugh be on them------------Sixgun

Pitchy, not being the brightest bulb in the light store, I'll need to see that accordion spinner actually making yarn before I can figure out how it works. Looks way cool though!
