This is a full size tintype probably reversed. I noticed one of his hands is missing part of his fingers and thumb (I think). He also looks to be wearing O.K. spurs and carries a bowie. Nice tintype. It is on Ebay but not mine. It went for a little over $1000.00

Can't make his Revolver...maybe a Remington? I think part of his thumb may be gone but his fingers seem to be folded up under his palm. Neat old photo indeed RR7! thanks for posting.....
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
You can see the nail on the thumb, thinks its the way he is griping the chair, have to agree the butt looks a little like a Remington more than a Colt, I wonder if pure gold watch chains show up that way in Tin types?
A tintype will always be a reversed image of the subject. It is simply the nature of the process. A piece of iron (tin) is painted black, and the silver chloride solution is spread on, allowed to dry, and when exposed to light thru a camera lens the image "seen" by the emulsion is a negative and reversed image of whatever was in front of the lens. When the emulsion is "fixed" with fixer (can't remember the name of that stuff), and no longer sensitive to light. It appeared as a positive image due to the black surface of the media (iron plate).
If you have a b&w negative. place it directly against a black object, it will appear as a positive, but reversed image.

I agree about the hand. But the writin' on the back sez something about the chain bein' painted. I can't make out the gun butt well enough to tell about what model it might be.

NO.....they dont show up like that in tin types. It was common practice then to water color pictures to make them more life like. I have seen many civil war pics where the faces were colored, buttons, watch fobs etc.

Just my opinion...

Look at the left side of the photo, I think I see his fingers curled out in a relaxed pose, but with his arm held back so his pistol and holster can be seen.
