Today is VJ day. Totally unmentioned by the media, of course.

Another one of those things the generation before us had to endure. Depression and WWII. I salute you.

I think the official day in the US is Sept 2, but may be mistaken.
Too many forget, in any event.

August 14 was the day that Japan notified the USA that it wanted to surrender; September 2 was the day that the formal ceremony was held and General McArthur accepted the signed Japanese surrender on board the USS Missouri.
I think that it is a shame that it isn't important enough anymore to even be mentioned in the news.
It certainly was important to my Dad.

Sept 2 is what we remembered (formally) most but, yes, never forget our finest.

As my FIL reminds us every year, it was the 15th when the japanese asked for peace. It was only the 14th HERE, not over there where the lead was flying. He tells it this way:
"We'd just finished refueling the battleship "Texas" and she was maybe 400 yards away when a cheer went up on the Texas that shook the deck of our oiler. I ran to the radio room to find out what was going on. The "on duty" radioman had gone to the head, so I was the first to hear it, in Morse code of course, (he was a raadioman also) and breaking radio silence for the first time in years, annouced to all the ships in the area "The japanese have asked for peace. Break out all relevent pyrotechics, celebrations to begin at sunset". We shot off the 40MM guns until we ran out of star burst shells."
