Rem 750 in .35 Whelen

Post by FWiedner »

Synthetic stock. Iron sights.

Would you buy one?

The price is reasonable, and I can't think of a thing I need it for.

But I sure do want it...

I have one, shoots as well as my 700 with a lot less recoil.
It doesn't like light loads, seems to do great with factory Nosler 225's.
I hope this helped.

For me, price would be a huge factor on that one. Two things would limit it to price. First, I am not a synthetic stock guy (although I recognize and appreciate the merits of them) and second I am not confident in the 750. When I looked hard at a 35 Whelen I spoke at length to a gunsmith for Gander Mt. He said regionally, in 23 years he has never seen a gun returned so often. He told me most of the time he could get it to work properly with a new magazine or by tweaking a magazine. Many went back to Remington and some of them still did not work right upon return. On the other hand he told me his personal friend had purchased a carbine/synthetic stock and did not have one lick of trouble with it. For my purposes, I consider the second shot critical, so I passed on the rifle. For the right price, I'd be willing to give it a chance or even work on it myself if it didnt function reliably. Bear in mind there are a lot of used 750's out there and many low-ball prices on newer ones if you take the time to look. If you can't get along with it you'd be hard pressed to get a premium price out of it and it may be a hard sell that will take a while to move. Again, a "can't lose" price would make all the difference for me.

If "want" didn't trump "need", most of us would only own 3 guns.

Have a 760 in 30-06. Looking to put an 18" barrel on it. Mine handles well, shoots flat and accurate. The remington pumps are underated and sneered at by the bolt action snobs. Why, i don't know :?: But i'm glad i have mine!

You know, I've always like the .35 Whelen. A vastly under appreciated round. And, I like Remington rifles. But darned, they just don't make that model for southpaws. Thumbing through something like Gun Digest, I see so many desireable long guns, but very, very few are for lefties. What with today's CNC machines, making left handed actions is as easy as making right handed ones.

I share Joe's concerns for the Remington autoloaders - I've had my own personal experience with them being finicky and magazine picky.

Maybe this will help you out: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =245928775

You will also notice that there are a bunch of 750's listed on gunbroker... didn't see one 760 and only a few 700's and other bolts - and they were listed higher.

Cool caliber - good thumper without too much recoil - about like the .338-06 really.

IS 750 THE CORRECT MODEL NUMBER ?? I REMEMBER MODEL 740's AND 760's BUT SOMEWHERE LOST IN TIME THERE IS NO RECOLLECTION OF A MODEL 750.
I REMEMBER ABOUT 60 YEARS AGO WHEN MY GRANDDADDY, MARSHALL ED SEGRIST, HAD A 740? [ 760 ? ] AUTOLOADER 30'06 IN THE BACKSEAT OF HIS CAR WITH AN LEO ONLY 20 ROUND MAGAZINE IN IT. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE COOLEST RIFLE I'D EVER SEEN, FAR COOLER THAN MY DADDY'S 1898 KRAG CARBINE.

I pretty much agree with that having messed quite a bit with the Whelen . However much like the 358 WIN ,I prefer the 338 Federal over the 358 WIN and the 338-06 over the 35 Whelen .

If i could only have two rifles and they both ahd to beased on the 30-06 cartidge I could live with the 6.5-06 and the 338-06 and never look back !
Same could be said for the 264 WIN MAG and 338 WIN MAG if a belted case were the choice !

And while I'm at it in a short action case I could ease on by with the 260 REM and the 338 Federal .

Lets just say I'm MORE then kinda partial to the 6.5mm and the .338" !

I am also fond of the 6.5mm calibers - but have only 6.5x55's.

I could be done with a 6.5x55 and the .338-06.

These days I've got concerns with all Remington's products, especially their 'Marlintons'.

I have NO concerns for the present Marlin or Remington products . And then I have no intention of buying ANYTHING new from them either .

And to be honest prefer guns from both that are 30+ years old .
