Shot a Marlin 45-70! Awesome!

Post by Poohgyrr »

A bunch of us were shooting Friday, and I saw a crescent butt stocked, engraved 1895 45-70. It looked sharp, and I asked about it. A few minutes later and lead is going downrange. It was a blast. This could be addictive.

loads using 305 to 405 gr bullets at 1000FPS to 1700FPS are the best and will show you why our elders were'nt handicapped by'em. When are going to get your own, and which one do you want to buy? 3leg/Todd PS how far you from McKinnleyville?
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Ah yes you got to shoot one of the 1895 CLTD ones ! crescent buttplate , pg stock , nice walnut , engraved reciever in french grey , short mag tube and the half octagon half round barrel !

When I was in my heyday of collecting Marlin's I had 2 or 3 of those in my hands at variouse times !

Never did make a deal on one , but I kinda wish I had !
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !

Todd, I wish! Our budget is tight or I'd have one already. And while my heart is much closer, my job is near Sacramento...

6pt, that's the one. I forgot to mention the barrel & half mag. Thats a nice Lever; glad I was able to shoot it.

I've enjoyed shooting a few 45-70s, in Sharps, Marlin, High Wall and Martini actions, and yeah they are fun for a few rounds, but I don't think the fun would last very long if I started shooting 50 round matches with one.

I really like my Guide Gun, but when shooting the heavy for what Marlin can handle loads, a few rounds are all that are fun. The 350 grain lead bullets at the lower end of the chart are a lot of fun.

Those are VERY nice rifles! Think they only made 1,000 of 'em? I got to shoot one once out in CA. 8)
Have you hugged your rifle today?
