bought a 30 WCf

Post by ollogger »

but only after i siffted thourgh a dozen of the worst rusted guns ive ever seen not to mention the beating they took befor the rust started
a 97 win that wouldnt pump, S&W pistols that wouldnt revolve, a cute
FN 25 that was junk, some i didnt reconize, it was sad
a gun in a scabbard caught my eye & i pulled it out, that one was a
surprize, at least i could tell it was a 94 & is in good shape, scabbard
bluing ware, beaver marks on the stock, minor rust, witch cleaned up
& the bore turned up a # 9. other than some abuse its not seen any use the rest is like new, ok i paid 200.00 for it im happy i could
rescue the poor thing.

Nice.
I love it when people use the 'WCF' designation.

Salvaged from a fire? Why were they so rusty?

ollogger,
Just curious, are you sure it's a 1950? My confirmed 1950's barrel is marked 30-30 Winchester on the top, but 30WCF on the underside.

I'll bet yours is late 49 or so.

ollogger,

Well, the data base on our home page agrees at 1950. However I've been told it has errors in it so I won't guarantee it.

Your gun was made 74,931 units before mine, so it could still be a 1950 vintage and be marked 30 WCF. I do not know when they changed the stamping.

When you get a chance to take it apart, look on the bottom of the barrel.
There will be a date stamped there. That's the barrel date.
On my 94 the serial number and barrel date agree.

There is another chart I thought I had, that's the polishing room chart. But I can't find it. I think forum member jbledso is the one who put it together. It might be a better source of data for your rifle.

rich,
They do up till 63. After 64 they dropped the date stamp.

ollogger,
Nice find! Congratulations!

Regarding the 30 W.C.F. barrel marking.....according to the book "WINCHESTER 94 The First 100 years" by Robert Renneberg, the change in the barrel marking from .30 W.C.F. to .30-30 came at around serial number 1,550,000.

If that is correct, then your barrel was produced in 1949 but was not assembled to the receiver until 1950.

I do know that the ammunition headstamp on WINCHESTER cartridges was changed from .30 W.C.F. to .30-30 in 1946.

Enjoy your new rifle!

I think we're getting the 30WCF bracketed: dad's old "thutty" he bought in 1950, serial # 1,709,xxx is marked 30-30 WIN.

Has a fair amount of rust itself. Needs somebody to rescue it.

circa 1950 Winchester cartridges

Post by w30wcf »

For those of us that like to have a box of cartridges that were manufactured the year our rifle(s) was/ were made......here's the one for 1950 (1946 - 1958)

To narrow it further, ser. # 1,703,xxx has a barrel that reads ".30-30".

  I like the price; $3.40. I could actually afford to shoot factory ammo at that price.

Thanks for the neat pic, John. Brings back memories. Dad had a box of those for several years 'til I came along and shot them all up in one year trying (unsuccessfully) to get my first deer.

And the $3.40? Pretty substantial price: I remember being impressed about 1952 that the foreman on the ranch fence-building crew got $10 per day. I don't know what the grunts were getting paid.

Joe,
Me too! :D I was going to remove the price but decided to leave it on the box for nostalgia.

earlmck,
You are most welcome. It did fo me as well. When I was 12 years old (1955) my dad let me shoot his '94 30 W.C.F. and, as I recall, that was the type of box of cartridges he had at the time. :D

As an additional note:
Winchester .30-30 ammunition available in 1950 also included a Hollow Point (box below), soft point and full patch.

ollogger,
If you wanted some ammunition with the .30 W.C.F. headstamp to match your barrel, this was the last box style that contained that cartridge.
