Queensland Aust - NOT AGAIN - Severe Cyclone Bearing Down

Post by Jacko »

I can't seem to post any Lever Rifle related topics lately fella's and then they are bad news but this is important to me.

Us Queenslanders have not even begun to put things properly back in order from the severe flooding which was the largest natural disaster in Australian settled history over the last 5 weeks and now an enormous Cyclone. Cyclone Yasi, the 2nd in a week is bearing down on the poor souls of North Queensland. This Storm is over 500 Kilometres wide and is rated at a Catorgory 5 with winds of 291 KPH, thats close enough to 200 MPH. It will make landfall very close to Cairns and hit Innisfail which was almost blown off the map 5 years ago when Cylone Larry hit the town.

Here's a link that will give you an idea of the scale of this thing. http://www.weatherzone.com.au/satellite/ Apparently is not quite as severe and quite as big as Hurricane Katrina. Just blows my mind the damage Katrina did and like her the Storm Surge is expected cause severe damage.

Please spare a prayer and thought for the community's that are going to be severly damaged and lets pray harder no people are Evacuating as ordered and no lives are lost

I love to travel and go to warm places your homeland is on my list!
but over the years I have talked to the locals in all the places I have been.
I like home! I can deal with the odd day of -40 or wind chill of -50+ :D
I hope it steam's out and is not as bad as the forecast calls for.

Last report I heard puts that big mongrel of a thing at over 500 miles across and it will hit land tonight bringing with it a tidal surge of up to 25 feet. It has been reported as the worst cyclone to hit QLD since 1918.

Wish the folks over there luck or send them your prayers, because in the coming hours they will be needing all the help they can get.

Awesome in a word !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Down here in South East Queensland we may cop a little rain but that will be it.

Up in North Queensland especially and down the coast for a 1000 kilometres will get pounded this evening and toomorrow. The Weather Bureau has warned this Monster is so powerfull it has a high likelyhood to travel inland up to 1000 Kilometres to Mt Isa and the Sth East of the Northern Territiory and still be a Catogory 2 cyclone - truely mind blowing - Usually these things hit land and peter out into rain depressions very quickly.

I heard on ABC radio this arvo that the Inhabited Islands in the path of this thing can expect a 10 metre Storm Surge and as said earlier 7 metres on the mainland, particularly south of the eye of the Cyclone

Things are stepping up right now for those poor bastards up there. I dread waking up tomorrow morning for the news it will bring.

ABC Emergency - Cyclone Coverage
"Cyclone Yasi crossed the Queensland coast at Mission Beach at midnight with the large destructive eye extending between Innisfail and Cardwell.

Power cut to over 173,000 customers including the main evacuation centre in Cairns where around 2,000 people are taking refuge. Thousands of people are sheltering in evacuation centres.

Yasi's destructive core, with gusts of over 125kph, will weaken as it continues to move west-southwesterly. Yasi is south-east of Georgetown and will be near Mt Isa tonight as a tropical depression.

Damaging winds, with gusts above 90 kph, are occurring along the coast and extend inland to Georgetown and Hughenden, and will extend further westwards towards Richmond and Julia Creek during the day.

Higher than normal tides and large waves will continue between Port Douglas and Ayr and sea levels may again exceed the high water mark on the morning high tide.

Flood rains will continue along the coast and ranges, with heavy rains extending across the adjacent inland. Flood warnings are current for a number of rivers between Cairns and Mackay.

Police are warning that, although the cyclone has weakened to a category two, it is still not safe to venture outside in cyclone areas. Police urge people in cyclone areas to remain indoors; only if it's safe, check on neighbours."

So far, no reports of deaths or serious injuries.

Thankyou for your concern folks. The Cyclone has devestated or wrecked many Towns and small communities and shredded many a farmers crop but the really destructive winds did not leave too much of a mark on the City's of North Queensland. As the Cyclone hit on a falling tide the Storm Surge was not as big a danger as forcast.

Quite stunning it has made it nearly 900 kilometres inland in less than 24 hours and as of an hour ago was still a Cyclone. Thankfully it's weakening into a Low Pressure System which still can not be taken lightly as it still will have gusting destructive wind and as it's slowing down will dump more rain in it's path.

Now the poor buggers up North can get to putting there lives back together. On a political note I think the State Government has done another credible job as they did in the recent floods in managing this crisis and is co- ordinating very well with the local authorities, emergency services etc to begin putting folks lives back on track

I still can't believe a Cyclone watch has been put on centres as far Inland as Mt Isa and Longreach and it's likely to reach Alice Springs in the Northern Territory as a Low pressure system before it disipates - just startling'

Hows your big Winter Storm folks, has it blown itself out. I hope all are keeping well.

Good news it wasn't as bad as it could of been. I know the winter storm here, U.S.A., is creating some problems, but it's winter time so no crop damage. Just watched a big industrial building collapse on TV because of roof snow load. I didn't catch where. Lots of business shut down.
