OT- New Sling for my M44 Mosin

Post by horsesoldier03 »

I know, NO its not a lever. Well its a RUSSIAN Lever, they just didnt quite know how to make the lever throw the right way. This is my knocking around rifle when I go into the Trinity River Bottom or slews back home in Texas. I made a sling for it out of 550 cord. Nothing pretty to look at, but this is what I consider my survial rifle. Not bad for $70 out the door! You cant help but like a cheap shooter, this one keeps groups at approx. 3" at 100 yards, normally at 50 I can keep them all touching. Anyways, 550 cord always comes in handy, this sling ensures I always have about 75' of it with me for emergencies.

Great idea, and the sling sure helps the look of the rifle. Boy the russians sure know how to make ugly rifles.

I suppose there's no "official" way to braid-up such a sling, but how did you make that braid? Is it all one long piece of cord?

I took approx. an 8" string doubled it and tied it on one end. Then I took three equal strands all which were approx 20-25' halfed them and placed the center of the section onthe 8" string. I made a half hitch on the center strand. This gave me 6 strands coming off of the 8" strand which serves to secure the top of the sling to the rifle. Once you get it that far, attach it to a door knob or hook and start braiding. To braid it, I pulled it into 3 strands with two cords in each strand and braided it as a 3 strand flat braid. See the link.

You cant really make one that is all one long strip of 550 cord. You can make one out of 2 long pieces of 550 cord but you would have to weave rather than braid.

Yep, seen two of them today when I was out Pawn Shop hoppin. Both were $225. I honestly thought the price was kind of high, but after checking Gunbroker by the time that someone paid the seller+FFL+shipping that price looks pretty good. I finally got in on a surplus gun at a decent price so enjoy esculating prices, I just wish it had been the 1903 or an M1 Garand. The M1 Garand is the next surplus rifle I am hoping to get. However, the AR bug is starting to bite me, I also checked out an Olympic Arms with the Standard GI stock and a Free Floated 20" Black Stainless Bull Barrel at $799.

Speeking of Mossins,I just worked on one for a friend. He's older and cant see squat with
the iron sights. What I did was remove the top forearm wood, drove the pins out of the
rear sight. If you then tap the sight forward to remove it reveils a 3/8 dovetail like on some
22 scope rails.I then slid on a 3/8 to weaver adapter, then mounted a red dot on that. You could easily put a scout scope on a 1" set of rings with the 3/8 dovetail mount. The trick is to fit the forearm piece back on...

Have you had much time to shoulder it with your new sling? If so how does it ride?

The sling rides very nicely. I am thinking of trying to make one that has 3 strands in it for a total of 9 strands, its just a bit thin and requires periodic repositioning to keep it from digging but I think that of most slings that are under 2". I do like the ability to adjust it. I can get it set where I can lock in tight to help sturdy up a shooting stance or loosen it so I can cross sling when the need arises. Definately gonna have to take the wood off again and check out M Wun's comment.

With the bayonett permanently attached, the M44 Mosin isn't light enough to comfortably carry afield very long without a sling. Fortunately mine came with the Russian sling and ammo pouches. Even so, the sling tends to slip off of my shoulder over time. Guess I should find a jacket that has something to catch the sling and keep it from gradually slipping off the shoulder. Any suggestions?

J Reed,
The 91/30 is the Mosin where you can do that tap off the rear sight thing.I did the same thing with a 91/59 which is a cut down 91 or 91/30.No other Mosins have that dovetail under the rear sight.
