Win. 94 Range Report.
Rifle: Winchester 1894 Pre. 64 (1961).
Scope: Weaver K3 Wide.
Ammunition: Federal Classic 30-30 Cal. 125 gr. HI-SHOK H.P.
Anyone have a legitimate reason as to why I shouldn’t use
this round on PA. Whitetail deer?

O yeah,
Totally impressed a guy down the line from me with my little o'l 94.
He had one of those synthetic glass bedded stocked MOA scoped varmint rifles.
He was actually reloading “precision” ammo. right there at the range.
He had a press mounted to a bench and a suit case full of reloading equipment.

Re: Win. 94 Range Report.
nice shooting. why did you choose the 125 over the 150 or heavier bullets?

Last yr. I bought out a large variety of brands and bullets of 30-30
ammo. on a G.B. listing. I tried these 125’s and found them
to be more accurate that anything I ever fired from my Win. 94.
They are also very pleasant to shoot.
My thinking: If my 25-35 Win with a 117gr. soft point works on deer,
why not a 30-30 125gr. ???
Re: Win. 94 Range Report.
That gun is on! As long as the bullet is a deer bullet and not a varmint type it should be fine.
Re: Win. 94 Range Report.
If I recall that bullet is intended for deer and it's not a reduced recoil round either - good velocity on that one. Good shooting!

After doing a little on-line research;
I have come to that very same conclusion.
I would not Hesitate to use this round on deer size game.
Re: Win. 94 Range Report.
I always choose the heavist bullet when hunting in the Pa. mountains. But, with your results, it seems like it will work.Placing a bullet were it counts, will always trump caliber, muzzel energy, velocity, bullet weight, bullet coeffecint. Go with what you shoot the best.

PA. people are a little set in there ways when it comes to bullet
gr. choice I have noticed over the yrs.
30-30 & .32 spl. = 170 gr.
30-06 .308 & .300 Sav. = 180 gr.
.243 & 6 mm. 100 gr.
.270 = 130 gr.
25-06 120 gr.
And so on and so forth.
PA. Folks are great people but they sure can get in a rut
and not venture outside the box they have been using
for yrs.and yrs.

Yes, because as you have a perfect wardrobe of clothes on, you left a spot of dirt on the knee of your jeans.casastahle wrote: Anyone have a legitimate reason as to why I shouldn’t use

Hey, the group looks good. Deer are thin skinned animals that don't take much to knock over, especially in the short ranges of Pa. Everything is shot placement and by the way your gun shoots, its all up to you.------------Sixgun

Excellent! Can't argue with bullet holes in all the right places.

Re: Win. 94 Range Report.
I would use a heavier bullet....
but if it is placed right....
and you get good expansion....
why not.
it would also depend on the size of the deer too!
if he was really big....neck shot!
Looks like a keeper too!.......nice shoot'n!

I guess I’m just not your average bear when it comes to bullets,
I have always gravitated to the light & fast.
Remember, I’m the guy that thinks the .243 Win. Is the greatest
thing since sliced bread.
Re: Win. 94 Range Report.
Growing up in the deer camps in the central hardwood mountains of pa. the big debate was the winchester 71-.348 200grn. v.s. the remington 760 amish assualt rifle in 30-06 180 grain ROUND NOSE. So i am old school and own both firearms. But the way you shoot, you are teaching an old dog new tricks.casastahle wrote:Tman, you are not alone.tman wrote:I always choose the heavist bullet when hunting in the Pa. mountains. Re: Win. 94 Range Report.
That particular loading from Federal is the most accurate in my '94 too. It'll work on deer, I have data to show it.

Re: Win. 94 Range Report.
Many years ago, my old Dad loaded up some Sierra 125 JHP for me. I used these exclusivley for a long time on Texas deer and turkeys. I recall there were 4-5 boxes of this ammo initially, and I would use 5 per year to harvest 5 deer per year. Neck shots, shoulder shots, heart shots - all are killers. I did not plink with these shells, ever, they were only for killing. Some years ago (10?) I realized I only had five of Dads rounds left. I could not bring myself to shoot them, I just keep em in my shop to look at, and spark memories of my hunting youth. Dad used to put the load data on stickers fixed to the box, and the sticker is gone - sorry no load info. When I switched to Corelokt 150's, the only difference I saw was more recoil. My conclusion is this: 125g 30-30 bullets go together with Winchester 26in barrels like good whiskey goes with a shot glass.
