Muskrat? I said, MUSKIT!
A Winchester 1894 "1971 NRA Centennial" Musket to be exact:
I stumbled across this in its box on a table in an outdoor flea market Saturday. I thought it was just the box until I asked to see it. The rifle was in a plastic bag inside the box, unfired, with some old varnished oil here and there. Not a spec of rust or funky discoloration on the receiver. The carrier was forged. No papers.
How much? $300. I offered two, and we settled on $250.
Took it out to the rage yesterday with some factory ammo I wanted to turn into empty cases, and jeepers does this thing shoot. The mag tube has a knurled knob at the forward end that rubs up against a boss sticking below the barrel. There's a good bit of force from the magazine tube on that boss, and I figure it's stiffening the barrel something fierce, helping accuracy. Whatever, it kept putting them into the same spot on the 100 yd berm, and chased an empty quart oil bottle all over the place.
I could do without the medallion in the stock, and the silly "engraving" on the receiver, but I can overlook that because this 94 puts the lead where I want it. And it looks really, really, old-school cool.

great buy - for what you paid, I would gladly live with the medallion and engraving.

And yet, I can't believe how many of these I passed by because they weren't pre-1964 guns... That IS a great price, I've seen them change hands at $600.

I appreciate the sentiment in your photo, however, with respect, as a former USMC/USMCR Small Arms Repairman (2111) I have to point out that the photo depicts a Marine Drill Instructor, presumably GySgt R L Ermey.
A Marine Drill Instructor would NEVER use the term "soldier," he would use the term, "Marine."
Again, no offense.

I saw a twin to that musket at the local gun show. $750, NIB. While that may have been priced too high, you got a heck of a deal. CONGRATULATIONS!
