Winchester .405 ammo VS Hornady

Post by crs »

On the Ables web site, they have Hornady 300 gr .405 for $32, which is just 1/2 the MSRP of the Winchester .405 ammo on the Winchester web site. Both are rated at 2200 fps.
mmm, that must be really good Winchester ammo?

The Hornady's are .409 bullets and do not shoot well in my friends 1895. His .405 like .411's. You probably need to try different kinds to find out for yourself.

86er;
Well, OK. You talked me into it!
I have factory Hornady JFP , will buy some Winchester, and will talk a friend out of some 2250 fps handloads using the Hornady spire point bullets. I will also keep poking around for other ideas, like loading my own , since Ihave the dies and powder already.
It would be interesting to try some 350 and 400 bullets, just in case I need to shoot a tusker!

I have two different lots (more than a year apart) of both spitzer and flat point Hornadys. They are all nominal .412 (+or- .0002").

The problem with the heavy weights are that there is not enough powder room left to get to decent velocities. Even the Hodgdon manual lists the 400gr load at an OAL that you will never fit in the M95. Also be careful as the magazine tapers. A max OAL that will work as the top round will not work in the bottom of the magazine. If too long, the bottom round will stick. If it does, there is no magazine spring pressure to make any of the others come up to feed either.

Thank you.
How often what seems simple suddenly becomes complicated due to little known things.
