OT A little hunting story.

Post by Nath »

Last night I got my Knife making friend to come over and shoot some fox with his 270. Rob has stuck with 270 for years now and in my opinion a wise choice for Britain. He was using 140grn B tips on his Sauer. He uses two scopes, a leupold when chasing deer and a Bushnell (I think) variable with PX adjustment when varminting.
The sky was lit up from the moon or rather the cloud was lit up and it was raining on and off. The first place was a small farm just starting with lambs and some have been snatched. Last week we shot a black'n but apparently there is another but he did not show for a shot however this feller did.

If you look at the sheep wire you can notice a section missing. That Nosler took the wire out and still killed the fox approx two yards this side, we were about 60yds the other side. Yes the fox did have two holes in it.
We went else where next after a short drive and called in a couple of places but nothing showed but at the third spot we bumped into two fox's with love in mind and they made us. Rob had a rush shot @100ish with low light from my small lamp but still connected but as we got to it we realised it had got away so with alot of follow up work we did eventually find it. There was alot of blood and liver and as I am trying to teach my dog to follow a fox blood trail I got her on it. She is still a pup bare in mind but she did follow it in the end that gave us a bearing what with other evidence etc. It was good work all the same, we had just blown his guts out and he made it across a small road about 150yds or so.

Next we drove to another place and after a short walk bumped into another pair in love! We managed to get down to 150ish or less and in some haze/mist Rob made a good head shot on the large dog. Good shooting allround. I know it's not a lever but Rob is a fan of them and with invites from him in the past to shoot deer on his patch he knows what they are caperble of  Here is the last fox.

You grow big foxes on your side of the pond! Much larger than the foxes I've seen here in Oregon.

Nath,
Again you've posted some great pics! I've been bitten by the predator hunting bug pretty hard in the last couple of years. What's your technique for foxes; calls, decoys, lights, etc? Where I live in Indiana I probably see 1 fox for every 20 coyotes, and I have yet had a fox come to a call. I think the foxes here have to be extremely wary living in coyote territory.

GK, it has been quiet for a couple of years. I don't know where all of these have come from but every body around here for miles says there are loads of them. They are easy at the mo because of the love bug but a couple more weeks and it'll go quiet and them vixens will go super stealthy. They are a good critter to hunt by day or by night, keeps us poor deer stalkers busy

Nemhed, good questions :D Our fox's have no preds other than man so when they hear a call they come in a treat, that is if they have never been shot at while answering a call. They are very intelligent and soon learn, like yours really. Yours will be watching/listening from a safe distance because of the yotes. My main call is my hand! Sometimes I will buy a squeaky toy etc. Rob in the above pics used his squirrel call I think from your side of the pond for the first fox.
My lamp is only 20watts as I usually are on my own and I try to stalk down the range to get a sure shot. The dim light does not freak them out. It's good for about 150yds. I recently got some more batteries and so am going to rig up a cheap 55watt set for when that 270 is about.
Really my favourite method of hunting fox is early mornings with a good lever and it don't matter how big the hole in the barrel is too. I like making a stand against a tree on hill side or in timber and calling. I cover my face some and hands. Come aprill/may the vixens will be feeding young so early mornings can be fruitfull, sounds cruel but if you don't want every thing else ate she has to go! Been doing it for years and it don't seem to be doing any damage to them

Foxes are not very big. Take the hide off and they are about the size of a large house cat.

Good on ya Nath. I've read a book about a fellow who lived in S.Florida and grew up in our Everglades. He talked of using different lights than we would today. He used a carbide head lamp like a coal miner would use. He explained that the angle of the light was important as well. His main hunt was for raccoons and gators.
