OT - Retiring tomorrow

Post by perry owens »

At last - no more spending half my working life in aeroplanes and the other half in smelly pulp mills in the middle of nowhere.
Time to teach the grandchildren to shoot and to get some more antique guns back into shooting condition.
Time to practice the things I do badly, like welding and playing slide guitar, also read all the books I promised myself I would read and never did.
Time to spend on Stickledown Range at Bisley, getting my Shiloh Sharps to reach out to 1200 yards.
Fix up the house? Sorry Dear, don't think I will have the time......

I have been retired eleven years now and have hardly scratched my list of "things to do" :D :D :D

Good for you!!

Enjoy the freedom.

My Dad retired about 5 years ago. Got on his sailboat and headed South from the
Great lakes. He's made it all the way Venezuela and now is working his way back.

Good Luck to you, Mr. Owens!!

Ignore the "honey-do" list. If you
wanted a list of things to do, you could
stay employed and get paid to work
on items on a list.

Let us know how the Sharps works at
long range. What caliber?

Perry,

Congrats friend!
Enjoy tomorrow and take it all in. then (RELAX) get a nice big sign "RELAX" and put it right on the entertainment center.
Its ok to hang with some of your other retired buds for the Coffee Clutch/grab the paper etc. in the AM but after about 30-40 mins, say gotta go! Otherwise you can get into a habit where everyone just sits all morning in the coffee shop  Nothing gets done??

Best of Luck! and RELAX

Great! I hope you have many years of "too busy to work" ahead of you. I retired last Dec. and noticed a couple weeks ago that the "edge" was gone; no more competition (at work, for that lane on the freeway, for that place in line at the grocery store, or that parking space). Retired Dec. 1, and fled L.A. Dec 2!

Best of luck in your retirement. I hope it brings you wonderful times. Just remember, often there is a period of adjustment that can be a little rocky. I retired a year and a half ago and went back to work for a full year. I am now about seven months into real retirement, although I do teach a couple of classes at the local University to keep me engaged with the real world.

I have a dear friend who retired from the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was a State Trooper. A few months before my retirement I asked him how retirement suited him. He told me that on his last day, they took away his gun, badge and car. Then another trooper drove him home, let him out and said... "Have a good life Jack."..and drove off leaving Jack standing there in the Uniform he wore for 35 years, sans gun and badge.

The next morning he had breakfast and went out into the back yard to do a little yard work. After about ten minutes, he stopped, looked at the weed whacker in his hand and thought.. "So this is what I worked 35 years for.".

I think most of us have "weed whacker" moments in early retirement, but we adjust.

It's better than anyone says! Been free for 2½ years now and I couldn't be happier. I haven't missed work for even one second. Now before you get weird about it, consider that you're not retiring from work but rather switching careers to a 'Gentlemen of Leisure.' I plan on enjoying my new 'career' for at least 40 more years!!

CONGRATULATIONS! I spent my share of time both on airplanes and in paper mills. Can't say I miss them much, particularly in late Summer.

Enjoy the retirement you have earned!

Congratulations on your retirement ! You're probably going to love it since you obviously have non-work related interests. Some guys almost seem to "die" when they retire because they don't know what to do. I'm in my 13th year of retirement and have plenty to do. Every day is Saturday and you don't even have to wear a watch !! Best wishes. :D :D

Congratulations! I hope you will enjoy yourself.

I too will soon be joining the ranks of the retired. April 29 is my last day after 32 years maintaining traffic signs and pavement markings for the City of Redding, CA.

My favorite quote regarding retirement came from one of my fellow workers whom I met several months after he had retired. I asked him how he liked retirement, and his response was,

"It's like having six Saturdays and a Sunday!" :D

Being stupid and stubborn enough to try to perform with integrity and be self-employed in a highly-regulated 'industry', I won't get to 'retire' - but at least I enjoy my job enough to do it until I am too frail to do so. I see too many guys get into some awful job they hate, yearn for retirement, then shortly afterwards they realize they are too beaten-up by all those years to enjoy the remaining ones, or worse yet, the remaining ones are fewer than they thought.

Enjoy it while you can.

Good luck, and God's blessings in your new "job".

I retired from teaching Feb 5, 2010, and am looking for work in another field..... I can't afford to buy a can of gun powder the way things are.

Lobo,
I thought public school teachers receive very good retirement packages?
I am pretty sure most that have in Pa/NYS when retiring are usually around $4000-$5000 @ month and very cheap Full Medical coverage??
Say someone making $75-$80K @year with say around 30 years service???????

In Texas, if a teacher retires at first chance, he'll draw 60% of his best three year average in a state the doesn't pay teachers well in the first place.

Congrats!!!! I pulled the plug June 1st of last year after 30 years in the fire service and LEO. I'm only 51 but my knees are shot, but I can still get around good enough to hunt and fish  People all the time ask me what I'm doing now and I reply "whatever I decide to when I get up in the morning." I do wish I'd quit waking up at 0500 every morning, but I guess 9 months isn't enough time to break a 30 year habit.

Congratulations, Perry. Hope you keep yourself busy. It seems that people that were healthy their entire working life, retire and go home to sit in the easy chair and don't make it two years.

I've got a good 10 years to go. I could pull the pin right now, but I'm too young for Medicare so it's off to work I go.
