OT but you may like!

Post by Nath »

I have been busy recently, I decided to get a Parker Hale Enfield 1858 two band in .58 smooth bore!
I did a 200mile round trip to collect it and it looks to of been never fired!
It seems very well made.
Shooting wise it seems to like 75grain equiv of pyrodex and a greased linen patch and a .563 ball.
It also likes a .570 bare ball on top of the same charge with an OS card on top.
1oz of shot and 60grn equiv and three cards between the two will take a rabbit to 30yds too.

The rub is the sights as can be expected are way off. I had to make a new blade for the front which is now to tall and has been adjusted tonight ready for tomorrow.
The rear sight has had to be adjusted to the right also.
Besides that I got a hunt in yesterday and by aiming off I got me two rabbits all be it 15yds and 25yds. The damage was akin to a 22 hornet, there is a super sonic crack so it is going more than 1200fps.

The best group shooting off hand was 2 1/2" @ 45paces, at that it should take all sizes of game upto around 50yds all be it a hit or miss afair on small critters at that distance.

She is fed up! I been pullin her up and makin' her walk to heal. She just wants to hunt after a season of flushing birds, this stalking is boring! Do her good!

It was good to smell the smoke again for sure but it is a heavy gun. I need to find a period correct sling!

The other thing is, if I get it shooting with the rear sight on the lowest setting which is what I wish to achieve then I may need to bend the stock down some.
In the lowest setting I am pressing my cheek on the stock a fair bit which is no good!

Nath,
Many years ago I had an original that had been bored out to 16GA, only ever used it with shot but it was great fun.

I bought an unfired P/H 2 band smooth bore about 8 years ago and never got to fire it! A guy at the gun club pestered me for it so much I let him have it but at least I made a £100 on the deal. They are really well made, you'll never wear it out. :D

Got a correct Enfield sling that came off one of my Sniders - you can have it if you want. It's a lace-up type - no metal parts to rattle.
PM me if you want it.

Nath, I have three Enfield rifled muskets ,all by PH and all three have very high combs that make short range shooting difficult for me. I don`t want to change anything about them though as all are in mint condition. I am more of a collector than shooter on the muskets anyway. :D

Here is a Whitworth (sp?) in .451 cal Hexagon bore.

What's with the slick barrel?

Weren't the M-1858 Enfields Rifle-Muskets?

Was this one bored out as a forager's gun? Rebarreled? Or is it an incorrect reproduction?

That Tia looks to be a real sweetheart. Any idea how good she'd be on quail?

Doc, you could say it's incorrect due to our (UK) stupid gun laws. Smooth bored, they can be acquired on a Shotgun Certificate, that is a lot easier to get than a Firearm Certificate, plus if it's rifled our stupid laws won't let you hunt with it!

GK has it, some were made smooth and I like your description of a foragers gun.

Well I tried it again today and the sights are getting closer but for some reason the grouping has gone bad! I am hoping it is due to not cleaning it out with water and just using olive oil and patch. Tonight I have swilled it out numerous times with hot water untill black stopped coming out. It shot much better on day one off hand and a heavy trigger than today but today I was resting of the car also! It will be of interest to see what happens when I return to shooting off hand.
I also crept the charge up but it made no difference.

Nice Whitworth Chuck :D
