I just put a Leupold m8-6x on mine and I love it. Weaver rings and bases.

If you want to go "value priced" get a Simmons Pro- Diamond in 4x. It's actually marketed as a shot gun scope. Can be had for less than $80. I bought mine at WalMart. Here's mine on my 1894c
I have one of these on a .41 Mag carbine (Contender) and the diamond is useful as a ranging tool and instant elevation adjustment.

If I couldn't avoid having to use a scope, the discontinued Weaver 2.5 would be my first choice but the Leupold low power variable 1.5-5X is a darn good and compact scope.cvarcher wrote:Something in the smaller compact size.

scope
I own both the Weaver 1-3x20 and Leupold Vari XII 1-4x20 and both are fine scopes. Another I'd recommend for you would be the VXI 1-4x20 with heavy duplex reticle. Not overly costly and one of the best names and warranties in the industry. I doubt you'd regret chooing any of the three.

When I had a Ruger .44 Auto (original model) I put a nice little steel Weaver K 1.5 on it. It was perfect for a gun of the type. Fast, big field. I traded the Ruger and, like a fool, the scope, in '84, for my Marlin 1895. The Marlin has a Williams Foolproof on it. Don't know which would be better. The Ruger never made meat in several years of hunting it...but it shot very well out to 150m or so. The Marlin's recoil says 'no scopes' to me, as I'm somewhat of a stock crawler. Still wish I had that Weaver K1.5, though! It might do well on my old (1981 vintage, pre-cowboy, pre-safety) 1894c.

Red-dot, light-weight, passes plenty of light, good to at least 100yds.

I don't see red dots as better than a good old-fashioned peep on a lever gun. If someone needs a little help seeing out of old eyes (I sure qualify!) then a low powered compact scope makes sense. But most electronic sights add bulk around the waist of a trim lever gun (pregnant sows come to mind) without offering the advantage of magnification. I will quickly admit that the ACOG and its brethren are doing good things on the BATTLE rifles of our guys in the military, but on a sporting rifle, I don't think their advantages (lightning fast pickup, see in the dark reticles, and all) make them superior to an aperture sight. That's my horse-and-buggy, pre-cell phone, batteries not included, grandpappy opinion. You young whippersnappers do as you please!

How about a new-on-the-market $500 peep ?
One short Weaver base/ring (30mm), and you're good to go.

i've had both red-dot & maginfying optics on the 1894c and enjoyed them both.
but since the 'c' is basically a one hundred yard gun, i've opted to go back to the open sights.
the standard buckhorn sights seem to be accurate enough for my applications.
(although, i'm like some others around in that these aging eyes need help seeing the front sight bead and i think i'm going to have a good hi-viz sight bead of some sort installed in the very near future.)
