Because some "appraiser" told him it was worth that? I'm not into 1st gen Colts, but isn't that a refinish?

Looks like a reblue with the Jay Scotts mentioned. To answer your question the price is that high because the seller is ethically challenged and the bidder(s) are ignorant.

He's off by a digit in the text - 15420 in text, 154230 on the revolver. The s/n seems a bit high for 1893; I have a 1st. gen with an 89xxx which, by chance was produced in 1889. Dunno. A lot are refinished from that era; any which can be proven original in that shape would be astronomical , indeed worth $6,000. - $7,000. A refinish is $3,000. - $3,500., no more. And, that presumes it is mechanically sound and the polishing didn't obscure too much of the lettering or round edges.

Note how many bids he's got.

That looks like a very nice SAA. Even with the letters and documents... I'd not go much over $2800 for a Colt like that. The patent line still looks pretty good to me... if it was reblued they didnt bugger it up to bad.

I'd have to be getting the boxe, papers and a lock of JW Hardin's hair for $7500 with that pistol thrown in the deal

happy new years gentlemen and ladies.

It doesnt look like that good of a polish to me. The edges look buffed a little. It isnt anything near a grade that could be termed a restoration, its a gunsmith "reblue". I think its about a $1500-$2000 gun tops.

The seller doesnt say anything about it being refinished (maybe I missed that?), the implication is that it's a good condition old gun. The number being left off in the description changes the age, as was mentioned.

If this is the sellers standard mode of operation, I wouldnt trust him in any deal.

I like the "ethically challenged" comment. Unfortunately, internet gun sales and auction sites are overrun with this type so it is definitely a buyer beware situation. :(

The SA in question is most assuredly a refinish, and a poor one at that. Over polishing always results in weak markings and rounded corners. Also, the grips are lousy replacements that are poorly fit. IMO, the gun should not bring a cent over $1500, and probably considerably less. :|

If they were going to refinish it you would think they would have case hardened the frame and hammer and try to find period grips.

Yikes! I was doing a few things at once and didn't notice (man, getting stupid) the color-case or lack thereof. Given that, I'd have to agree with the $1,500. above, with the other $1,500. (from the $3,000) going to whack the hands off the butcher who did that.

A HORRIBLY OVER-POLISHED REBLUE WITH VERY POORLY-FIT GRIPS.

I'd peg it at no more than $900.00, and I'd take the seller to the woodshed in the bargain.

If you watch gunbroker very often you will see alot of gun listings that have outragous reserves that are left to start over after the gun is not sold. IMO I blame the gun auction sites for even having an option that allows this. Its always annoying to se someone trying to get inflated prices on a gun way beyonds its value.

Or, silly starting bids. When I want to determine a value, I go to the closed auctions and make sure it sold at the price, not just relisted. I saw another funny example: a Ruger Vaquero Birds head in .357. The guy started it @ $700. They were $450. new only a few years ago. Don't know where he got the idea it was worth that much or more; I have one and wish it were worth that or, maybe not as I should probably keep it.

I think a lot of people are just plain out greedy. They are scammers as well preying on the stupidity of other people.

When I'm looking for something and see prices that outrageous I don't even stop to look close. It's not worth dirtying my hands on that kind of seller.

I have noted that some sellers are heavy into shill bidding as well. Look at some bidders history and you'll see some of the same folks bidding up things for them again and again. Such folks are never going to make a sale to me.

hear about the ringers. Bid on reloading presses before and for some reason, the person bidding against me reneged on paying and the seller wanted to know if I wanted it for my last bid. Told them if they would take off the other guys bids and get to where I was the high bidder before they started, I would take it. Never heard back from most of them, but one was quite nasty about "well, you bid up to so much, you should be willing to pay that". I replied that it looked like someone was just trying to jack the bid up and I didn't care for that, so you can keep it.

The lack of case hardening usually denotes a refinish. But the gun COULD have been a special order all blue gun. I do doubt that. What is the giveaway is what looks like dished screw holes, especially on the right side. Also, the stamped rampant colt and barrel lettering is well worn which would have taken the finish with it.
But you never know, willing buyer, willing seller.

My best guess is $1500.00.

The REAL giveaway is the rounding of the edges on the frame and grip frame parts. Then you look at lettering, markings, &c., and it should be obvious that it's a botched reblue.

I still think $900 is about all it's worth -- if that. Just another buggered-up Colt. Too bad...

It really isn't worth ANYTHING.

I agree. The grip frame was obviously polished while off the frame. That's why both have rounded off edges were they mate. When the gun was made the mating surfaces of the raw parts are milled, D&T-ed,assembled first then the exterior surfaces finished. That's really the only way to keep those mated edges crisp.
The guy said it was lettered so I suspect it did leave Colt as a blue gun. Surely he would have caught that if it weren't.
