OT - Derringer Question.
I have the bug to get a Derringer.
I know very little about them.
What I do know is, I want it in .38spl to be a companion to my Colt SA.
I intend to replace the grips with ivory to match the Colt.
You guys in the SASS, what is the Derringer of choice right now?
I would be greatful for some web sites to get me started in the right direction.
Thanks

I just did a search for Lady Derringer, looks like an interesting web site mailto:amderringer@aol.com
Whatever you do always give 100%........... unless you are donating blood.
Personally I have an old Hi-Standard .22 mag derringer that I've had since I bought it new in 1976. I've used it as a backup to larger pistols and as the primary gun when nothing else could be carried. I always figured even two shots from a .22 mag would be better than a jab in the eye with a sharp stick.
I haven't shopped for them in some time but if I were I think I've be looking for something that gives good penetration. I don't think you can consider a derringer capable of "knock down power" but then that's my two cents worth. There was a company making a double action similar to the HS that came in .38 Spcl. that I thought might be a good buy. To me a derringer needs to be small, light, and easy to conceal. to be honest about it some of the stuff I see today in .45 colt and such is so big I'd just as soon carry my S&W 640 instead. there just isn't that much difference in the size or the weight.
I know Paco has said he carries a small (NAA I think) .22 mag as well so they are far from useless.

I have one of those little cheapie Cobra .38s . Not a target pistol but it actually works pretty well. Carry it in my front pocket when I'm out walking the dogs around town. Even w/ shorts on it's next to impossible to see.
I've been looking at the Bond Arms guns for a while. Seem to be nicely made and you can get interchangable barrels as accesories.
Haven't fired one but haven't heard anything bad about them either other than they're kinda on the large side.

I was checking those Cobra's out on line today, looks to be what I'm
looking for. Could you post or PM me some details as to your experience
thus far with that Cobra 38. Do you have the long or short barrel?
What ammo is working the best out of it?
Thanks

I have the short barrel blued version w/ the white plastic grips. Looks just like the cap guns I used to buy at the amusement park when I was a kid. Probably why I bought it.
I've fired just about every type of 38spl. through it I could find. Works w/ everthing but has a preference for 148 Gr. Wadcutters. Strictly a stick it in their face and pull the trigger kinda gun. At 7 yds it shoots pretty close to aim but top and bottom barrels hit about 6" apart.
I know it's a mouse gun but if something goes bad I figure the BG is gonna have at least two holes in him while I'm beating the snot out 'em.
Like to get the long bore in 9mm. I have a case of plastic case training ammo that would be a hoot in the derringer

The wife and I have the Cobra's, mine is a 22 mag, and hers being 22LR. I can't say how hers' shoots, but mine is actually somewhat accurate. The top barrel hits about 5 inches above, and two inches to the left of the ower barrel at 20 feet. Each barrel on its own, will shoot into about three inches at that distance.
I should have gotten the 38spl, but these came in a set at a very attractive price.

Been there done that.bfm wrote:Look up Bond derringers
They look to be top shelf.
After looking at the dimensions and weight of the Bond,
I realized it is almost dimensionally the same as my Sig.

You mean like this?
I need to replace the grips as well - just haven't gotten around to it.
I was looking for a "old style" or "traditional" looking Derringer in .38 Special - for the same reason, interchangeability of ammunition, as well as something worthwhile from a self-defence standpoint. I didn't want to spend a fortune either. I bought this 15 or so years ago - for about $100! I'm not sure the company is even still in business - Davis Industries.
A Derringer is not something you shoot all the time, so this is more than acceptable. I found it works extremely well with .38's loaded with Speer shot capsules, they loaded with .36-caliber round balls.

Yes Ysabel, that size
Though I did some research on the Davis.
There was one listed on GunsAmerica for sale.
Ask the seller a few questions about it, (glad I did)
Got a reply that it was sold awhile back.
Hummm, not to cool having a gun listed for sale that’s long gone.
Anyway from my research, if correct:
Cobra took over Davis.
Davis guns had a bad reputation for coming apart. (made with pot metal)
Davis guns were illegal for sale in CA; do to not meeting safety standards.
True or false who knows, think I will stay away from the Davis’s
To be on the safe side.

Like I said Ysabel, the info. I gathered could be true or false.
There was very little info. out there on the Davis Derringer's.
What I got was from searches on various forums.
What seemed to be consistant was the Davis Derringer
is considered to be one of the first Saturday night specials
of the 70's. (for what that's worth or means)

Like I said, it doesn't get used that much. Not like it could ever be the most accurate of guns to shoot - I have a lot of other choices! It is a handful too when shooting regular power .38's.
Funny thing is that Davis added a safety - something not found on the originals - to be compliant with various state laws, like those in CA.
Just goes to show us that the anti's can't stand guns, and really can't stand guns that the common man can afford!
