Bolt mounted Peep sights to replace the ugly Rossi 92 safety

Post by Nate Kiowa Jones »

It's taken a while to get this done . Over three years, two hurricanes and rotator cuff surgery in between but it looks like it's finally coming together. After 4 different design prototypes and testing, I posted a picture or two here and getting some input on how to improve it I finally realized that one style would not work for everyone so I settled on two styles. Next step was to get the prototypes done and tested then apply for the patents. Got that done and the prototypes shipped off to the CNC machine shop to be made. Hooray, we're rolling now right? Well, not quite. The CNC shop had some machines that went down that put things on hold. Now, 6 months later we finally get that worked out (new CNC machines shop) and the parts are being made as I write this.

Yahoooo

When I first started this project that first one was fixed, no windage or elevation (W&E) adjustment. W&E had to be done with the front sight. It just replaced the ugly bolt top safety with at least something that was more pleasant to look at and actually served a purpose.
After trying several modifications to make it W&E adjustable and not feeling good about any of them covering all the bases I decided to make two different versions.

This one will be called the Bolt Mounted Peep/Safety. It will replace the ugly safety with a fixed W&E peep sight but it will still serve as a functional safety.
When it's in this position the firing pin is blocked and it's obvious the safety on because you can't see through the sight.

Once it's turned so you can see through it for a sight picture it is now off safety and ready to fire.

The projected ship dates for this Peep/Safety should be january 2010. I'll post the price once we get some details worked out.

This one will be called the Bolt Mounted safety replacement elevation adjustable peep sight. It will eliminate that ugly wart safety. Just for clarity, the Rossi 92 still has the 1/4 cock notch on the hammer just like the original Win 92. The Wart safety didn't appear on the Rossi's until about 1999-2000 and the EMF imported rossi's didn't have them until 2006.

Thanks to Doctor Tim Skinner for modifying his sight and making them for me so they work with my adaptor this Bolt Mounted safety replacement elevation adjustable peep sight will be ready to ship before the end on this month.

Excellent! I hope they sell like hotcakes for you!!

Is the Bolt Mounted Peep/Safety about the right height for the factory sights?
Kind regards,
Tycer

Well, yes and no. Depending on the caliber, octagon or round barrel and barrel length the front sights that come on the gun won't even work with the rear sights that come on it.
The middle ground is the fronts sights on the 38/357 guns will work. The fronts for the heavier recoiling 44mag and 454 and heavy loaded 45lc guns with the 16" barrel may be too short.
There's a few ways to go. Either try it then figure out what it needs or just buy a really tall one and file it until you get it where you want it or use a temporary sight made of tape built up then trim and measure and order the style and height you need.

FWIW - The 2nd option, above, should work just fine on 16" barreled .45 Rossi M92's - Since that's almost identical to the Skinner Lo-Pro that I mounted in a replacement safety plug I made, this past June.

My .45 Rossi 16" Model 92 zeroed in three shots, after I mounted it.

The safety/sight is so well-centered with the bore, that the adjustment after zeroing shot #1 was to move the front sight approx 1/32" to one side, the adjustment after zeroing shot #2 was to elevation (2 turns), with no further adjustments req'd as verified by shot #3 being on target perfectly.

Subsequent shooting has borne out the veracity of that zero.

Kiowa's offering a good deal, folks - considering that I had to not only buy the Skinner, but also make a safety replacement plug, then D/T it for the Skinner, too.

I think that the Skinner Sight should work well. The 275 gr Barnes XPB bullet in 480 Ruger is light for caliber and should shoot low compared to heavier slugs moving slower. It should work slick with the fiberoptic front sight that came with the gun.

Nate - seny an email regarding this.

That adjustable sight shown is just the thing I need - kills two birds with one stone!

I figure that a taller front sight will be needed to comensate for the increased height of the rear?

Great job solving a PITA problem!
