Tree Huggers Invade Hunting Area
Ok, I made it to the trailhead early, to hike in and climb up to my observation post over a clearing. I got up there just after dawn and was glassing here and there, hoping for a buck to enter.
About 9 am I heard bubbly talking from down the trail, and soon this procession of hikers went right through my kill zone. 20 or 30 hikers, with floppy hats, aluminum walking sticks, and baggy short pants with knee socks (even the guys although some of the gals looked like guys even through my Steiners).
I climbed down and checked out another spot, then hoofed it back to the car. I decided to take a shot of the trailhead (usually it's just my car parked there) so you can see what a Prius convention would look like. 16 cars, combined weight 600 lbs.
I did have a chat with a latecomer I ran into. He was from Montana, and he was afraid a deer hunter was going to shoot his dog. I told him not to worry unless his dog has antlers.
See, the namby-pambys aren't ALL from California.

What the idiot bunny huggers did is also unethical and posibly illegal if that state has a Hunter Harrassment Law in effect.
Next time take the licnes numbers of the cars and report them to the Possum Cops for harrassing hunters and disturbing game.

Dang Doc!!! Can't I have a little fun??? Spent 3-hours in the emergency room at the hospital today with my friend who has brain and lung cancer. He got terribly dehydrated and they had to hydrate him. I'm in a foul mood tonight. Right now, I'm inclined to go out and cut my own tires. Not really but you know what I mean.Doc Hudson wrote:I sympahtizw with the thought, but that is not only illegal, but unethical.Modoc ED wrote:Sure there is. Yeah, you're right take their numbers and call the cops. It is illegal in CA to hinder/interfer with hunting/hunters.

I was thinking how inconvenient it must be when the batteries in those little go-carts spontaneously combust the way they do.Modoc ED wrote:Sure there is. Correct me if'n I'm in error...but, I heard from a Toyota mechanic pard that the batteries last about 100K miles. Then the owner has to spend about $8K replacing the batteries. Is that right?

Re: Tree Huggers Invade Hunting Area
I wouldn't even THINK of cutting their tires, Ed. we just loosen the valve stems and let the air "escape" by itself. Once, while we were in a High Sierra deer camp a group of Sierra Clubbers came noisily parading by, chastising us for "killing Bambi". Well, one of 'em, a slight female, went on by and a few minutes later went behind a large rock to "do her business". Well, she had no idea that the rock was in full view of our camp and we all applauded as she stood up after finishing the job. We received a BIG mouthful of unprintable invectives, and a had great laugh.Modoc ED wrote:Sure there is. naah, they weren't aware, just clueless. I'd be more inclined to report this morning's full-mag hunters. I heard 80-100 shots go off somewhere, in strings of 15 or so each. While they're away merrily hiking, cut every one of their tires.
Could this be a hunting technique? You think there might be something behind a bush, and you can't climb up there, so you shoot it up and hope the deer drops down?

Bob, I have heard a similar figure.LeverBob wrote:...I heard from a Toyota mechanic pard that the batteries last about 100K miles. Then the owner has to spend about $8K replacing the batteries. Is that right?

My knowledge of those batteries is that, on some cars, they are, essentially, a large package of at least 100 rechargeable "C" or "D" batteries. The batteries are soldered together in an arrangement that fits in a specific location somewhere inside of the car. Sometimes, the battery pack is a single layer tucked under the rear package shelf. Other times, it is mounted vertically behind the back seat. The battery pack could be anywhere, and be in any shape: flat, rectangular, log-shaped, etc..

Re: Tree Huggers Invade Hunting Area
So the entire world, even the ones that don't dress like you, should stay out of the woods and public lands because you might be hunting there? Then there is consideration of retaliation because some Americans went for a hike in the outdoors? I can't believe the unsportsmanlike things I read here sometimes.

As to "sharing" the woods ,... how about the planned hikes to disrupt hunting? Very foolish action on their part, in my opinion. I am a game food hunter and I won't go into heavy hunter infested woods during hunting season.
Re: Tree Huggers Invade Hunting Area
You should have stayed put in that stand, from some of my similar experiences, They kick up deer and the
deer end up running back in the same direction that the dumb @@@'s came from, then you shoot the deer.
Some times people moving through your area actually help you. I am an avid bow hunter and sometimes the
small gamers come rolling through my area and it kicks the deer right to me.

Re: Tree Huggers Invade Hunting Area
Here in CO most of the trail heads that are in hunting areas, have a warning sign put there by the DOW telling people about the dates of the seasons, and to be aware. Not all that use the woods are anti hunting or tree huggers, as said, use them to drive the deer to you or to talk about what you are doing. I hunt one area that gets high "public" usage and hav never been hassled, I aways say Hi as I walk by and smile. I am dismayed that acts of violance against their vehicles are suggeted, that is not etical or "right" in any light.

I don't think we have any idiots on our forum. I think the guys are just being playful in their "suggestions". If someone is stupid enough to actually carry out a criminal act at the suggestion of online forum members, then that person is probably stupid enough to eventually do it without any "suggestions".
"Watching what you say" is a philosophy of socialists who believe that it's somehow your fault if some idiot does something stupid. In essence, the perpetrator is never completely responsible for their actions. Despite the junk that liberal democrat socialists try to shove down my throat, I am in no way responsible for the stupidity of other people.

I ALWAYS have a valve-stem wrench handy. Great for making sure people w/o handicapped plates stay put to get their ticket & tow.
Looks like a decent anti-hunter-harrassment tool too...

Re: Tree Huggers Invade Hunting Area
Were these just a group of hikers in a hunting area or some anti-hunting types actively trying to interfere with the act of hunting? If public land they have every right to be there, the same as you. I live in CA and the anti-hunters are pretty militant. They will actually jump in front of a hunter's rifle trying to take a shot. It is a wonder that they aren't shot, hunters showing a lot of restraint. These people sounded like some twits with not enough sense to stay out of hunting area. They sounded ignorant and harmless by the OP.

No, actually, I take this very seriously. I worked hard with the ODNR and sportsman's organizations a lot back in the 80's and early 90's helping get the "slob hunter" mentality reduced. With hard work and education, Ohio got better laws for sportsmen and participants helped spread the word. Now this isn't the time or place to get into deep details and beat dead horses but you have to understand that you have some of these hunting rights and privileges because of this hard work by folks in the past. It can be easily undone with a few poorly uttered words or irresponsible actions. Simple things like learning to say that you "harvested" a deer instead of "killed" a deer in mixed company at a party discussion with non hunters can do so much for helping the sport. As for the hikers, if they were just going for a hike, God bless them. But if the were there to disrupt your hunt, then there are hunter harassment laws that are there for that reason. It is your responsibility as a hunter to make the call. If harassment then call the law and be prepared for the work involved. Have names, license plates dates, photos etc.

Re: Tree Huggers Invade Hunting Area
Last Thursday evening, as I was preparing to take the shot, a flurry of rifle shots sounded in the distance. 5, 10, at least a dozen shots were heard from the public land a mile to the north of us. Later, we had a report that it was three PETA activists shooting Mill Creek, hoping to drive the deer deeper into the draws and recesses of the canyon. They succeeded in ruining the hunt for some of our guys who had chosen the upper reaches of our area to look for the big bucks that are known to be there. Sad, but an accepted risk when hunting near to NF lands.
It's bad enough that the owners of this property deeded the land to the Nature Conservancy, and the "large" woman who oversees the preserve does not want any improvements to take place. One stream crossing has washed out and she denied any work to restore it's use. This means an extra several mile and over an hour's 4 wheeling for some guys to access their unit. The continuance of the hunting concession is tenuous, and only guaranteed until 2012. after that, it may be denied. She wants that area to revert to it's natural state, with all historical signs of past occupation obliterated. This won't happen completely, however, as PG&E must maintain the R/W of it's portion of the 500 KV Pacific Intertie, as well as keeping access roads clear and brush removed from beneath the wires. When the towers and wires come down, and they sometimes do, it's all hands on deck and to hell with the Nature Conservancy. With a loss of millions of dollars per hour and disruption of the Western power grid, the line must be restored to service ASAP.

The state owns game animals, like it or not. That means that tree huggers have a say, like it or not. You can catch more flies with honey, like it or not. I agree, kind of, with what you're saying but Gobblerforge is not like what you say, he's just trying to make things better for hunters and fishermen........ For someone who gets excited about being "attacked" you do a fair amount of it yourself [/quote]
If you just have to stick your nose in, at least stay on topic. Claiming I or Gobblerforge are conversing about legal ownership of wild game,.... or what way he is, or, is not,... is just way off base, guy! Why not just let the two of us work it out, without your interrupting hallucinations ?
Gobblerforge published an opinion. I published an opinion of his opinion. Neither was any more or less of an attack than the other, in my opinion. But, you, jumping in just to stir the pot is getting old and irritating. YOU are the one initiating the attacks and it is becoming a pattern!
I am not here to make you happy, fit your definition of what you think my posts should be, nor interested in your opinion about me. I don't know you, and don't wish to.
Just what is in you that you feel the need to be some sort of puter cop? Do you read all the threads looking for debates between individuals, so you can jump in between two folks talking? Or, are you just cruising all the threads following me, to see how quick you can get my goat?

Troll When you insult me or my friends, I really don't care what you like, dislike, expect or care about. At worst, I suspect you are a commie plant to make conservatives look bad....at best, you are just a rude hind end of a horse. Don't say stupid stuff and I won't butt in on you "personally".

76/44: Now I am confused. You offered an opinion about another person's opinion, but resented other opinions offered in response to your opinion? If everyone is entitled to an opinion, why the consternation of others' opinions about your opinion? My head hurts. I'm gonna take up drinking again.

Re: Tree Huggers Invade Hunting Area
Hey this is California. You can't walk any established trail without running into someone, especially during deer season since the weather is so nice. Nahhhhh...it sounds like they were just out for a walk/hike and wandered through your hunting spot. Happens to me every year as well. We just have to learn to live with it, folks. The same thing happens with dirt bike and ATV riders.
Share the woods, people...and be polite. We need to keep putting forth positive images of hunters. It's bad enough out there already with the anti-gunners and animal rights activists.

Some people just need a sympathetic pat on the head.....with a hammer. Repeatedly.
Re: Tree Huggers Invade Hunting Area
WDF could make a better effort educating the non-hunters of woods etiquette.....

Wow. My son, you sound like an angry man. That's sad. Now I know for certain that what I had to say shouldn't have brought that on. I'm thinking maybe there's something else a little deeper that you may need to address. I would like to respond to some of what you called me but for the life of me I ain't sure what you think I am. I guess I'm just no good at name calling. I think I'll just go out and do what's right instead.

Re: Tree Huggers Invade Hunting Area
My last thought. Some times to put these types of occurrences in perspective for me, I like to do a little roll reversal.
Guys have said it is just normal for the most part to have a group of fellow citizens come hiking through their stand or designated hunting area. But, I don't believe I have ever heard or read on a local or national level about such an incident. Seems as though the hunters, in general, take it in stride and no harm, no foul.
Now,..............
What,.... IF,.... a half dozen cammo clad hunters with rifles at the ready were to inadvertently stumble upon a group of naturalists having a sit down blanket pic-nic on their way to their designated hunting area of choice?
Do you think that could be what left liberal media material is made of?
My point?
When one portion of the political populous is inconvenienced, compared to when the other is,...it all ain't necessarily the same. Intentional or not,... the hunter will, in today's politicized atmosphere, always be presented as wrong. I'm just trying to say, I think hunters have done their share of showing respect to the other political persuasion,... there seems to be plenty of room for more and better balance in these incidents,.... that's all.

Naw. It isn't important. But if you really feel you gotta, just show some respect and be honest. That's all I ask of any man who wishes for me to hear his words. I don't have any room or enough time in my life for liars and thieves. And darned little for braggarts. I do like a good story teller though.
