Made My Decision, Deer Season 09
Going to do it this year.
Never took the old girl into the woods in the 6+ yrs. I’ve owned her.
Decided outside of a rainy day, she’s all I’m using this yr.
Born in 1903, me thinks she still has some hunt left in her. (25-35 Win.)

Excellent! She surely is capable of getting the job done.
I decided I'm going with the Marlin 44 mag this year. Except for one stand I may hunt which has good chances of a loooong shot of 300 yards or more where the 270 will come into play.

That is a beaut. I'm thinking of the 1886 (circa 1887) or the marlin 1893 circa 1920. I wish you well. Since I have three tags, perhaps I will have success with bow, blackpowder and centerfire this year.

It will work my dad uses a 25/35 on elk, theres a guy up here in MT that used it to take a grizzly back when they issued permits also know of a outfitter in the Bob Marshall, Howard Copenhaver who used a winny 25/35 to hunt from grizzly to predators and everything in between. Hes gone now but his exploits still standup. danny

You know I have come to the conclusion after much reading, the 25-35 Win.BigSky56 wrote:It will work my dad uses a 25/35 on elk, theres a guy up here in MT that used it to take a grizzly back when they issued permits also know of a outfitter in the Bob Marshall, Howard Copenhaver who used a winny 25/35 to hunt from grizzly to predators and everything in between. is a sleeper cartridge. Really seems to be able to gett'er done without all the
hype of glitz & glamor Performance numbers. (must be that long bullet )
Re: Made My Decision, Deer Season 09
That is a fine looking rifle. I wish the best of luck on your hunt.

I am sure "She" is not up to the task. Better send her to some one who will keep her warm and dry.

Re: Made My Decision, Deer Season 09
Ironically I just listened to a guy trading his 2 year old 270 win for a 7mm Mag because deer just won't fall to a light weigth cartridge like the 270! His friends warned him two years ago but he did not listen to their 'wisdom'.......
I guess there isone born every minute,
Nice choice with that old winchester......there is something a little more satisfying about taking to the wooods with a classic.

Good decision! Looks like you will have an exciting season.

Good on you. I have never ben the least bit reluctant to take any of mt Winchesters out for a hunt. Nasty weather, no problem. Those things weren't built to be used only on warm sunny days. If they get wet, just wipe 'em with an oily cloth, dry the wood and put 'em away for the next day, or whatever. A hair dryer also helps to get rid of excess moisture.

I just wish the forearm wood came off easily; I've had leverguns get moisture under the forearm, and rust badly underneath on the magazine and barrel. Should I just put a bunch of 'grease' or something really heavy under that wood, or what? It does seem a shame to keep a good gun inside whenever it threatens to rain.Good on you. This year I'm finally going to deer hunt again, and I've already picked my 336SC in .35 Remington from 1954 to carry into the woods with me. I'll use 200 grain Core-Lokts ahead of 39 grains of Varget.

Good on you! You won't regret it I'm sure. I've been toying with the idea of giving my Guide Gun a little break and giving my '94 .32Special circa 1912 a workout as well.
With a .45cal entrance wound I don't worry too much about bullet expansion.

Man I would love to have one of the old ones in .32 win. spl.leveractionjunkie wrote:Good on you! You won't regret it I'm sure. I've been toying with the idea of giving my Guide Gun a little break and giving my '94 .32Special circa 1912 a workout as well.

Ooops my bad I just double checked the age of that rifle . My .32Spcl was made in 1929, it has a 20" barrel and full buckhorn sights. But I am still taking it out this fall I need to get some more older winchesters, but they have become pretty pricey up here.
