I had the rear sight blade on one snap in half with just a small bump. It was made from some kind of cast pot metal.

gon2shoot,

Is your friend talking about the elevator that adjusts the rear sight?

~or~

Is you friend talking about the carrier that raises the cartridge up from the magazine to the chamber?

I only ask this, because I've never ever seen a rear sight elevator broken.

Right fellas, he said it hung up the lever, must be the carrier, I just repeated without thinking. He's supposed to bring it by so I'll give it a once over. IIRC carriers were a problem at one time werent they?
Might explain why he looked at me funny when I told him I had a set of semi-buckhorns he could have.

You might tell him to use the correct terminology next time and he'll get some real help.

Easy to replace.

What can I say, he's a welder, spends his life looking at a little blue light.
Doesn't have your expertise in gunology.
If it is indeed the carrier, what would cause one to break on the later (AE) models?

The most likely cause for the forward end of the carrier to be broken off is working the lever wrong causing the carrier to try and lift a cartridge that is still partially in the magazine tube.
Or there may be a mechanical problem that is preventing the cartridge from moving out of the tube fast enough.
The carriers are cast metal from the mid to late 70s up till the end.
They are perfectly good parts normally, but under enough stress and strain they can be broken.
Another cause is trying to feed ammo that is too long. Here we are back at the carrier trying to lift cartridges that are still partially in the magazine tube.

HE brought the gun by last night, it was the elevator that broke apparantly while the gun was in a hard case and the piece wedged between the reciever and lever. He swears it wasn't dropped or kicked out of the truck over 30mph.
Found him one that should work.

Rear sight elevator, NOT A CHANCE it was broken while in the gun case.
Cartridge lifter, again NOT A CHANCE it was broken while the gun case.

I know I wasn't there, but me thinks your friend busted it and just isn't telling you the truth.

Like Hobie asked: was the it the rear sight elevator, or the carrier?
